How to repair ships?

Got hit hard by German air force, expensive heavy cruisers 90% damaged, I told them to "repair now" but they have to go back to Australia to do that. Plus, they're just sitting sround in the Mediterranean waiting to get sunk, not even moving.

Why can't I send them to an allied port? When I try it just says "can't retreat here".

If you click "Repair Now" your fleet will attempt to sail back to the Home Port. If your Home Port is in Australia and you are in the Mediterranean, and they don't, then it sounds like the Allies have lost control of the Suez Canal and maybe your ships don't have the range to sail the other direction. You don't want to repiar in Australia anyway as that is too far. Select your fleet and Ctrl+Click an Allied Port to set a new Home Port. Then when you click Repair Now, they will go there instead. Alternatively, change your Battle Stand to Hold and just right-click an Allied Port for them to sail there and repair. Ships automatically repair when in an allied port even if it is not the Home Port. The higher level the port the more ships can repair at the same time.
