It's one of the two stats which together determine the number of attacks a division gets to make in combat, and thus how much damage (to organization, manpower and equipment) the enemy is likely to take when fighting with this division.

Why soft attack and hard attack? Well, every division has a hardness score determined by how much of it is made up of armoured or protected vehicles (from trucks all the way up to superheavy tanks) and how well protected those vehicles are. When a unit attacks, its soft and hard attack scores are modified depending on the percentage of the opposing division which is hard and soft.

For example, let's say a division has 150 soft attack and 50 hard attack.

Attacking a division with 0% hardness.

(1 x 150) + (0 x 50) = 150 total attacks

Attacking a division with 40% hardness.

(0.6 x 150) + (0.4 x 50) = 110 total attacks

Attackin g a division with 80% hardness.

(0.2 x 150) + (0.8 x 50) = 70 total attacks

So as you can see, having lots of soft attack will make divisions very dangerous to low hardness divisions, but will not help them as much against high hardness divisions, which is why hardness is a good thing to have, since most divisions will have much higher soft attack than hard attack.

Bear in mind that it's not related to armor at all, only hardness. Basically, if a division's piercing score doesn't beat the armour score of a division it's attacking it will suffer significant combat penalties. But these are completely all or nothing, either piercing beats armour or it doesn't.

Having 2 artillery with a 20 combat width is good enough, but if you want to be unstoppable then swap the artillery for tanks and almost no one can damage your units because your armor will be to strong for them to do any damage.

Should I take: 4 infantry battalions, 2 artillery battalions and 3 tank battalions in a division. Is that a good set-up in your opinion?
