How to switch countries during gameplay?

In HOI3 I remember that when you loaded a save you'd still have an overview of the world and then you would either press "Play" to continue as your current country or change it by clicking on a different country. While this did allow for cheating on some level, it was nice to be able to hop around different perspectives without starting a whole new game. In HOI3 you could re-arm as Germany and conquer poland, switch over to Japan to fight the United States, and then maybe finish on the United States during an invasion of Europe.

This could all be done on a single playthrough, and it was really cool to see your alternate history play out from different sides. But in HOI4, a save is tied to a certain country adn there seems to be no way of changing that. Am I missing something?
