To stay democratic hire Sir Patrick Duncan. He should keep your support for democracy growing. My bad. You can't hire him if you go abandon Westminster. Oh well. So you have to accept your support for fascism will keep growing.
If you want to go fascist you can break free with focus "Support the German coup" at 80% autonomy. You don't have to spend political power this way, as added benefit. You can also pick up "Voortrekkre Monument" along the way for extra +0.3 autonomy daily.

Independent South Africa. June 1939. Still very democratic.
So "Abandon Westminster" alone is enough. You have to forgo whole democratic part of the nf tree, sadly.
Support for fascism will keep growing. but it's very slow. +0.01 daily. You also get an event where you can get extra +3.0 support for democracy at cost of 5% national unity. At time of me breaking free I was still at 62.2 for democracy and 24.5 for fascism.
1) Go down the "Support the Policy of Appeasement" tree directly to "Voortrekker Monument" ASAP (Note: You won't be able to start this path immediately but that is fine. Do it when you can).
2) Select the "Increase Autonomy" focus in the "Continuous Focuses" section at the bottom left of the tree (Note: You need to complete 10 focuses before you can select a Continuous Focus. Just select whichever focuses you want at this point until you can take Increase Autonomy).
3) Save 300 Political Power and wait until your Autonomy Bar is full.
At that point you simply click a button and become an independent nation. You'll still be a member of the Allies but you can leave them if you wish (as long as you are not currently at war).
Edit: I just tested this in a game with historical focuses on. I became independent on 31 Jan 1939. If that is not fast enough I recommend building oil refineries because exporting oil to the UK will speed up the process.
look i DID all but i just cant become independent with pressing the button
