Among the first 3 entries should be a link to openAL and a guide aboit how to uninstall and repair it.
I mean uninstalling and reinstalling drivers is very basic stuff as described in those links, and I forgot to mention that I had actually uninstalled OpenAL and reinstalled the version from their website, but it hasn't solved the problem.
There must be some other global config file than the one I deleted in users/appdata/roaming that's preventing a full reset of the settings.
Totally confused over this, and really annoyed that I installed that dumb mod. Very hesitant to refund, and I won't be reinstalling Windows so I hope someone can help me with this.
EDIT: This thread on Reddit has a couple of people saying that deleting that .ini file fixed it for them. No clue why it won't work for me.

EDIT: Verfied integrity of game files to make sure it's using the original .dll. Still no sound.
this will ensure that the original file will be downloaded because the entire file is missing.
thats the only help i can offer, i have not the slightest idea what this stalter thing does... only that it causes sound issues like yours.
Yeah I mentioned that I did that in an edit. I appreciate the help.
Just a thought... Is it possible for games to set their own parameters for OpenAL, overriding any global settings? That would eradicate this problem for anyone who made the same mistake I did. I'm assuming it's possible since not all OpenAL games are affected.
Failing that, would it be simple to implement DirectSound or an alternate engine as a user option? (Out of my depth with this stuff, so just throwing ideas around).
Many thanks.
All i know is that stalker generates problem across the board and that deinstalling it completely, restoring all original files and never touching it again seemingly fixes the problems it introduced in the first place.
