Any good mapping for xbox controllers?
I've been sitting here trying to figure out a good controller scheme for my controller since the default setup doesn't include roll while flying and I can't for the life of me get anything that works. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just switch to a joystick + mouse/keyboard setup?

It would be nice if strafing could be toggled so the same axis could control that as well as normal pitch and roll.

Have you tried adaptive steering?
What exactly does that do? The description in game makes it sound like it just changes controls depending on the ship so I didn't think much of it.

This is what I used for Rebirth VR. Something similar should work for X4 as well, except you might want to add a lot more functionality to secondary menus on X and Y buttons. In rebirth the menus can't be changed. Basically this allows six-axis movement, although some axes are more awkward to use.

RB --> Roll Right
RT --> Fire Weapon
LB --> Roll Left
LT --> Fire Missile
LS --> Strafe
RS --> Turn (RS Horizontal --> Yaw, RS Vertical --> Pitch)
Back --> Main menu
Start --> System Menu

Y --> Abilities Menu
A --> Interact Menu
B --> Toggle Target Lock
LS Press/L3 --> Boost
RS Press/R3 --> Cargo Magnet.
DPad Left --> Next Missile
DPad Right --> Next Weapon
DPad Up --> Throttle Up
DPad Down --> Throttle Down

With adaptive steering enabled, the x-axis of the analog stick will have the ship to either yaw or roll depending on the ship's turn rate for these types of movement, and perform which is higher.
