Once you see the leak, get real close to it in your ship. No, closer. :)
it was Pirate Base PFN-277 and then a little vid panel pops up and mission dude says I better get the heck out of Dodge, made sense to me, but by the time I was ready to boogie, ship got fried and I was ejected in my space suit. (shades of Elite-D, the Interdictions..)
I managed to dock but like there's no Intergalactic Uber, and I don't think I can buy a ship at a pirate base with limited funds, 59.4k credits.. so, exit stage left, i.e., resort to save game file, go back in time.
so sixty seven dollar question time (inflation), not sure I want to do all that again. but I can't seem to abort the mission, which I'm willing to do, unless they take away my key to the executive washroom.?!?
You are supposed to do this mission in a quick ship. Make sure you didn't bring a freighter. The mission before this gives you a freighter, so this is a common mistake. Use a fighter, scout, or courier ship instead.
Second, just point yourself at empty space and engage travel drive. All you care about at that point is getting further away from the ships that are following you, and speed is the best way to do that. Don't bother taking the time to open the map or to figure out where the next mission objective is. You can do that after you are far enough away that you have some time to do it.
Third, since you know that you’re going to use travel drive to escape, make sure your ship has a combat engine. Combat engines start their travel mode instantly, while the other engines take several seconds to spool up. You can also boost just before engaging travel drive, so that you are already going pretty quick when it engages. Boost has even higher acceleration, in most ships, than travel drive.
Fourth, use the keyboard shortcuts. Don't try to use the menus to change to travel drive, just hit shift–1. Actually, I recommend going to the keyboard settings menu and changing this to F1. You’ll use travel drive all the time so making it a simpler keyboard shortcut is the best way to go. There are four modes assigned by default to shift–1 through shift–4, and I just assign them to F1 through F4. Don't forget that boost is TAB.
Fifth, be aware that these enemies will chase you forever. Literally the entire rest of the game, if you don't do something about them. However, they are pirates and virtually every other faction in the game is at war with pirates. If you should happen to dock up at a friendly defense station then when they catch up to you then they will be killed by the station and you’ll never have to worry about them ever again.
