Any fix to the dumb turret AI?
I'd love to enjoy this game, it's beautiful. But one thing absolutely grinding my gears right now is the turret AI. Doesn't matter if I'm in command or not the turrets don't seem to want to fire unless it's on "attack my current target". If I'm in a big fight I don't want the turrets on the bottom of my ship not firing at enemies bellow me because my currently selected target is above me or if I'm hunting smugglers by a station and my ship is less than 2km from them but my turrets won't fire unless I target them specifically.

I've seen posts about this going back to 2021 so its not a new issue. No arming and disarming doesn't fix it. No changing the turret behaviour back and forth doesn't fix it. Yes I do use mods but this happens in pure vanilla as well so I don't think its related.

If there's a mod that patches this or fixes this or some in game setting I need to change please let me know. I've been having this issue since I started playing, even in the tutorial mission. I hadn't changed any default settings so I've no idea why this is happening.

Well, in my unmodded game the turrets work fine. ;)

Do all turrets in your game have issues? L turrets, M turrets, turrets installed on AI ships, ... ? What if you disable all mods and start a new game, do turrets work? Just to make sure that mods are not the cause for the problems.

My first game was 100% unmodded and I had these issues. Didn't matter which ship. My hyperion, my Ody E. Same

So only ships you piloted were affected? And with the copilot or on other ships and stations the turrets work fine?

Any screenshots of the HUD (if you pilot a ship), the ship information window and turret settings? Maybe even videos showing these windows?
Also, what version of the game are you currently on? 7.5 or the 7.6 beta?
you can get turret upgrades to help them preform better. I think its a rarely used aspect of the game mostly for the player ship. But I wish making the stuff to do ship upgrades was something you could make. or was more available. So more ships in a fleet can get upgrades

I suppose you mean ship modifications? Those won't help much if the turrets don't shoot at all. ;)

Update, it seems it was an issue with one of the DLCs, not sure why but when I loaded the game without Hyperion pack enabled and tested one a fresh save with an ODY E the behaviour was fine. Re-enabled the pack and its still fine. Not sure why but it seems to be fixed.

You're getting it wrong, it's not that your issue is fixed, it's that the AI behavior gets stuck from time to time.

When you're in a small fighter, you might want to use "attack my current enemy" as it's 100% going to work.

When you're in a large ship, you might want to use "defend" and it should shoot whoever touches you.

Attack all enemies are good when they're "functional" but from time to time the AI behavior gets stuck and does nothing, and then give it some time, it becomes fixed again, nobody really knows why it's weird and many years later there's no mod to patch this.

If you're letting your npcs use turret, make sure to never use attack all enemies with their turret as it is calculated into their attack range.
