Yeah, I have never seen the "flee" command ever work out in a sane manner.
Yeah, don't use flee. Like, ever. Instead, set your destroyer default response to being attacked to "ignore" and order it to move where you want it to go.
Flee works fine for traders. Not so effective for warships.
Even better: A ship set to flee will happily fly through a jump gate leading to a Xenon sector where the Xenon ships came from which attacked the ship in the first place. :)

the AI is not only bad when fleing, its totally braindead at whatever it does.
I tell my destroyers to attack a station, only to see that they fly into the turret range of the station instead of staying at max range, and then they constantly reposition themself while also flying in station range to do that.

That's caused by destroyers trying to target obstructed modules and clumsily repositioning; try positioning your destroyers a few kilometers above or below the station's default plane.

Not really. They have limited resources and it has been pretty clear from the start the AI wasn't good and would never be good. They have obviously decided to devote somewhat limited resources to the AI and basically just do the best they can without throwing a ton of money at it to bring in legit outside help and do an entire overhaul.

It is what it is and it's probably not going to change except incrementally.

And yet they could afford to hire one of the former SC devs to overhaul the flight model? Which, while nice to some folks, was probably one of the least requested items and was obviously not going to be well received by all?

So, the thing that you like is the correct thing? Looks like you figured everything out.
