Recharge or capacity? I know recharge gives constant, but what about Ms?

I only ever use recharge for M's if I have to pick between the 2.
And for XL where there is no delay ?
Capacity is good if you are worried about sudden overwhelming damage (like getting hit by a broadside of gravitons) or if you expect to end most fights before your shields deplete.

Regen is good if your primary issue is smaller chunks of damage that eventually deplete your shield, making you have to withdraw to recharge with a fair bit of fighting left to do.

In an M ship both are possible, but in player hands I'd say you can probably avoid most massive damage spikes that would kill you outright, and that regen is probably better. M shields also just have really weak regen to begin with... but then, that also means modifying it can only do so much.

For an XL ship, significant damage spikes are basically "flew too close to a station/Xenon I". If you intend to do that you might want capacity to buy you time to use an Asgard beam or boost an Erlking out of range or something. Almost everything else can be dealt with by regen, and on some ships it can render quite a lot of things unable to kill you at all because they just can't deal more damage than you heal for.
