If you want to use it against capitals best to focus on giving it plasma or dumbfire turrets and don't count on the XL beam hitting anything in high attention.
Ok thank you! Its a great weapon when I drive it :D
Cheers mate!
Except that's not what Bombard does. From memory, Bombard is the equivalent of Intercept but for larger ships (L+). So if you order them to Bombard a station they'll probably just sit there doing nothing.
If the AI is flying the Asgard then I've only ever seen it use the ATF Main Battery against stations, and even then it's not consistent. Just use a regular Attack order for this, and keep an eye on them to make sure the AI doesn't get too close to the station. Turning "Boost" off inside the Attack order submenu after the order has been given can help with this (under Ship Behaviour I think).
So how you use an Asgard depends on context. Personally I always use the same loadouts to keep things simple.
All large turrets are (HOP or PAR) Plasma set to Attack Only Capitals, and all medium turrets are (ARG) Flak set to Attack Only Fighters.
Then if the fleet is designed for attacking stations, I only use Asgards. And if the fleet is designed for attacking ships, or defending, I have 3 destroyers Defending each Asgard (and a Sapporo following the fleet leader for the 80km radar range).
This way I can swap Asgards around on the fly (between fleets), or add any Asgard to any fleet, and never have to worry about the loadout or settings.
If you want to micromanage more than this then no doubt you could find better anti-capital and anti-fighter loadouts, but they'll pretty much vaporise anything in bunches of 5, so I don't bother. I just use fleets of 5 Asgards vs stations, and fleets of 5 Asgards and 16 destroyers for everything else.
The only reason I don't use destroyers in the anti-station fleets is because they get too close and wipe very easily. Way too much micromanagement. Trying to keep 16 destroyers away from a station is just... no.
I did have some Syns as point defence and that seemed to work ok, may switch to Osakas.
I consider asgard mostly a player ship. Teleport in, blew stuff up.
Syn are good for general anti big ship. Use a carrier (with interceptors) for anti small (a shark is good as it's cheap). I used osakas with flak to. Not sure how they compete now.

Haven't played vanilla flak in a long time, so I don't know how they changed in 7.5
