This good as a semi-afk game?
Before anyone gets defensive, I'm not saying it HAS to be played that way.

Short answer, YES. You just hire a cheap pilot and tell him where to go.
You can even give him multiple orders. Like trading with many stations. Just sit back, watch him execute your orders.

Even you know that's strange question when you think people questioning it is `defensive` which it isn't.

So, you want a game you can play, but not be around much?
I am genuinely interested to know why?

But you probably won't answer, so I'll answer your question. yes, there are people who've literally left the game running overnight just to see what would happen- and they haven't been destroyed in that time.
there are times, indeed, where you can stay afk, but its a matter of choice, I do faction war quests during those times and other times i just leave it for a night on normal speed. Its a matter of personal choice, you know sandboxing ...

Yes the game is overall rather passive. Building stuff takes a long time and your stations and ships can be more or less fully automated, so you can basically let the game play by itself for long stretches without the need to interfere.

elite dangerous some people were getting weird by auto dock and auto transit awhile ago. I don't know why.

Sometimes I just like to watch my pilots do things and listen to the brilliant soundtrack in the background and read the Books from Helge Kautz So in short, yes one of the best games, even for that. :steamhappy:

if you know what you are doing you can run the game overnight with seta on, and that even without making the galaxy burn.
I did that several times in this and older X Universe games.
In a month or so I will maybe have 2 out of 3 mega stations built. But yes OP your not wrong, I usually also play another game on side, like Total Warhammer 3 or Gladius.
My current playthrough has like 5 days played and only about about 1 day's worth of time am I in control of a ship. Honestly, there's not that much benefit to playing yourself once you start scaling up. Like sure, you can dock a lot faster, you can better prioritize targets and surface elements, and generally your ship will survive better when you're in control...but also you could just steamroll a battle by having as many destroyers as they have fighters as well (even though if the fighters were all individually player controlled, I wouldn't be surprised if the fighters won that). Sure you can't scan stations or leaks using the AI, but there's really not much benefit to doing so. Sure the AI can't hit the sweet spots on asteroids for better mining, but they don't need to because there are so many asteroids to begin with. You're not really involved with station building to begin with. Really, your presence is only needed to start processes.

Yes, once you get far enough into the game where you can queue up commands to subordinates to earn you passive income you can definitely play it while putting 50% attention on something else. For example I've had it running in the background while playing around IRL with my toddler. Works fine if you're just building up capital from trading income and maybe making progress on station construction. I just have to keep the sound on at a minimal level (you can set audio warnings to play whenever your ships come within sensor range of hostiles) and glance over every few minutes. I typically pause, set default behaviors/manually queue up commands for ships/stations, and then stand off to the side either on a station or capital ship and let the universe go about its business.

If something serious happens to go down that you can't respond to right away you can always pause, save/quit and come back later too.
The game can eventually be played almost like an idler mid to late game. There are a few things that can go horribly wrong mind you. The major one being a snowballing faction drop event that ends with you at war with a faction pretty much permanently. Most everything else can be mitigated with proper defense fleets (Automated Khaak base extermination), blacklists and defense stations (Keep Xenon in check). You would come in and check the status of your empire, expand via stations and reinforce fleets.

This does pretty much require the mule mod to make station logistics much better. I wouldn't play without it though as standard station AI options are trash.

The more you involve on micro level the more it shows up on a galaxy level. Involving yourself in the faction quests move stuff around the map way more then the map play (unless you are on a galaxy conquest yourself)

Not that i'm against recommending mods but none are required. And Mule is a notorious resource hog which should probably be mentioned.
