Mining Ships - Attacked and Destroyed...
OK so, I suffered my first big loss, two Medium mining ships, around 1.3 million in value got attacked and I lost them. Doing some looking and I'm seeing mixed responses. Some people in posts recommend Large Mining Ships and setting up Laser Towers around, others suggest a carrier fleet with Small and Medium Ships to patrol and another to defend, and others suggest subordinate ships to defend. What do you all do?

assuming you lost your ships to khaak... the next logic step would be to upgrade in size.

L ships, with the exception of the split miner, can basically ignore khaak for a very long time while continue mining.

the initial investment isn't much higher either.

whole patrol fleets or subordinates are also an option but the investment and reoccuring costs due to the occasional loss will eventually be higher.. especially if you are only starting out.

in the end, it is up to you what you think and feel is the best solution.

One ship was lost to a KHK Protector, and the other to KHK Queens Guard

The cheapest solution is to upgrade to large miners with at least two shields, and set them to ignore attacks.

When you buy a ship from a Shipyard or a Wharf get it at minimum loadout. Then take it to a Equipment dock to upgrade. You will save lots of credits this way. But on Medium Miners I use 1 mining gun and two Flak turrets, with some lasertowers. On global settings set Escape and drop laser tower for attacks for ships. You might wanna set Military ships to a different setting Use Judgement or Retaliate.

L miners are much better in long run, I like the Crane E Miner then i use mining turrets cept for the last 3 groups i put flak on them.

I'll need to figure out how to set these settings. I've not set more than "automine" yet.

You go to Global Orders to set all these type of player global settings.

And yet, in the long run, it's still the cheapest. As for the price of large miners, it depends on the model (faction) and the equipment; I like to use Magnetar Sentinel (ANT), with the bare minimum equipment to make it work and resist Khaak attacks: mk2 shields, but mk1 thrusters (since the ship will mostly stay still while mining or travelling on a straight line). Usually, that goes for less than 4M credits.

Being there was changes to screenshots not sure how you share them anymore, I could make You Tube videos for things, but I think it would be much easier to help players on discord and watch streams to help with some of the how too's and what not's.

If you have the firepower, find the local Kha'ak outpost in the sector, and destroy it.

Looking online to see where Magnetar are sold, not finding anything... I see references to buying the ships just not location.

Magnetar is a Argon and Antigone L mining ship, Antigone's has more cargo. They are ok but still i like the Crane E Miners and Heron E for Trade Ships Crane and Heron are Teladi and Ministry of Finance faction ships.

Yeh L miners are really tough only have to worry about the large pirate vessels

If you're lucky you can buy a Crane from Eighteen Billion for about 4.5 million? That's about the lowest I've seen although be prepared to pay 6+. Need to swap mk3 thrusters for mk2 and that will save you around 6 million and an L miner doesn't need mk3 thrusters. The Crane nearly always comes home. Should easily pay for itself. Plus they look like giant mushrooms.

You want to try and keep things simple if you can. Late game you'll have many pots on the boil so setting up elaborate fleets to protect a couple of M miners isn't very helpful. Much better would be to find where they will be safe and Oort Cloud is like a nursery for M miners and you can get quite a few in there. At least 6 mining silicon, ore and hydrogen. If you can do that then you're free to explore and plot your empire and those M miners in Oort Cloud will quickly earn you enough for a L miner. And they should be safe in there all game. I wouldn't saturate Oort Cloud with miners as tempting as that may be. You'll quickly fill all the orders if you do that which will lower the price and eventually make it pointless to mine there. Mining does require some thought and planning. Not every game is the same, but some things are like Oort Cloud being safe. You may have to increase rep with Terrans, but well worth it. Those miners you put in Oort Cloud should be the foundation your empire is built on. While they are in there go exploring, identify new mining oppurtunities for your L miners as really you want those puppies mining silicon for top price. Very few places will have this to begin with. Oort Cloud pays top price. As the game opens up you'll start to see more and more. Use trade filters on the map to search for ores and gases and don't ignore gases. Hydrogen is worth mining as is ore and silicon the best. Methane and helium I look at later on when I'm rich.
