Questions before buying
I need something to scratch that space captain itch that isn't EvE, ED or RG. I'm looking to buy Foundations but have read that Cradle of Humanity is a must for new players.

So my questions are as follows;

Should I start off with just Foundations and then wait for another sale to grab Vendetta and Cradle, then wait for another sale to grab the rest down the line.

Should I just grab Foundations + Cradle?

Should I just grab the bundle?

OR should I grab Foundation + Vendetta and Cradle now and not bother with anything that came after?

Thanks in advance for any advice.:bonfire2:

Terran DLC is definitely not required. The "starts" to the game really only do anything for you over the first hour or two after you get tired of the tutorials.

The nice thing they do is act as a little extra tutorial for some aspect of the game. With the base game, you only get starts with no extra tutorial. Young Gun and Dedicated Warrior drop you into cheap, little fighters. Untested Explorer drops you into a cheap, little scout ship - and you're better friends with more factions.

The Terran DLC has a start where you're given a cheap little Terran fighter, but you also get some guidance right off the bat on finding and shooting up some Xenon. Lots of factions don't like the Terrans much, though, so you'll have to overcome that. There's also the Project Genesis start, which gives you more peaceful missions to start with and puts you on a very fast track to get the player Headquarters quickly.

Anyway, I made a guide on all the starts. I need to update it a bit to cover the new tutorial structure and how Timelines fits in to things, but it's still accurate. I even tossed in a customized start for players wanting to get into mining right away.

I tried to start one a couple days ago. There are two starts. Neither really have a story. They have an end game objective, but no story epoch like Terrans or Boron.
There is a split plot story, you just probably haven't met the conditions for it to become available yet.

You do not need to use a game start that is split to do the split story plot. Just like all the other faction plotlines, you can do them all regardless of what game start you choose.
Yeah, I must not. Nothing was in the mission list but some long term mission.

Timelines is one you can skip entirely.

Well I could say a lot about Timelines (I won't), but it depends if you're a completionist when it comes to sectors? If you want those extra (6?) sectors then I think you need Timelines, and to get through Timelines once to unlock them.

I just spent 50 hours doing precisely that. And no those aren't tears of pain streaming down my face, I get hayfever. In February :)

Don't get me wrong, I understand why players would want to skip it. But myself, I couldn't tolerate knowing there are sectors I haven't got, so for that reason alone I had to go there.
3 of those sectors, in my opinion, are bad. It is the sectors dedicated to the new faction. The skybox there feels like its color is overblown in photoshop, and interacting with that faction is not fun. The other 3 are much better, but one of them becomes a Khaak nest and keeps spawning more khaak, becoming an annoyance.

Honestly, the main highlight of the dlc is Sapporo with its 80km radar range. And that free H, because it is a pain to claim on your own.

I haven't seen the (7 turns out) new Timelines sectors, so can't comment on the specifics, and they're all dead ends - so in that respect sure, not necessary.

On the other hand such choke-points might be good places for players to build (depending on what they want to be near - not sure about their respective resources), and they might provide space for other factions to expand into (especially with war mods), but again I'm not sure.

If you're going to spend a lot of time in X4 then I'd definitely get Timelines, no question. For me, it was all about the sectors, but a few of the ships also look interesting.

Regarding skyboxes in general, they could use some work :D

Some of the planets look great; Mars for example, looks awesome. But some planets much less so. Many could use an overhaul as they're quite noticeable in the "sky".

Then there are the stars in X4, which I'm no fan of. They look like little smudges on my 65" screen in 4k. I would prefer it if they twinkled, and/or glowed, and had radiant light. I imagine that would affect performance though.

Compared to the other DLC Timelines isn't such good value for money, but I wouldn't avoid it for the sake of saving enough cash to buy several coffees =:)
Base game is plenty. I don't think any of the DLC are must haves.

Split Vendetta has some of my absolute favorite weapons and ships in it. I don't much care for the Split civil war myself but I will always, always get 20 rep with a Split faction for their stuff.

Cradle of Humanity is good, the Terrans are a fantastic faction with some real economic challenges to solve.

Tides of Avarice is a very neat little story and the sectors unlocked are a really valuable little trade hub.

Kingdom's End is my favorite and the Boron are a real treat. If I could recommend only one for story reasons, it's this.

I did not care for Timelines myself, and if I could go back in time I doubt that I would have bought it. That's just me though.
I'd say all the DLC is worth buying, but none of it is really NEEDED. My suggestion would be the base game plus Cradle of Humanity, which has two excellent game starts (which provide a bit more structure and opportunity), some fun storylines, and a new area that is very good for early-game money-making. If you buy a second DLC, I'd recommend Kingdom End; after that, it's really a question of what sorts of content you enjoy most.

Welcome to X4, and I hope you have a blast!

Here's an interesting tidbit: Stars as seen from space don't twinkle. The reason they appear to do so from the surface of the Earth is because the atmosphere distorts them a bit.
