But, please elaborate on how you would prefer to have it work. Because I can understand the actual method in the UI being confusing (but that is a UI issue, not a selling ships issue if you ask me).
but you can only:
1) buy a new ship (no, i want to "sell" the ship)
2) upgrade the ship with better weapons or whatever
3) trade goods
its unbelievable, you cant sell a ship when you land on the right station and see the first "main page" for doing important things like 1) 2) 3)
i found manny options to change color/texture of my ship but to sell it was impossible.
there MUST be a option to sell your ship on the "main trading page" when you land on the station...
edit:
the most stupid thing was,
i couldnt sell the ship to the ship trader guy on the station.
I'm talking about the menu at the top of the screen that drops down when you land (or hit enter). I may just be remembering incorrectly, but I seem to recall seeing the option to sell ships show up there when I was docked at a wharf/shipyard that had other ships that I owned also docked.
Select a ship flown by an NPC, rightclick on the wharf/shipyard, sell ship(s). Works for ships without a captain as well. You might be able to sell them when docked but it's been ages since I tried to do that. You can buy ships the same way.

Here's how you buy ships when docked:

You never once had a ship selected, and right clicked on a shipyard or a wharf?
Granted, you added the H to sure, but let's not split hairs here. People miss the most obvious stuff going all the time. But....seriously? That's up there with "is it plugged in", given how the rest of the game controls....
So. Let's just assume you've "forgotten", eh?
S and M class ships are sold at Wharfs. L and XL classes go to shipyards. If the place cannot make or sell that class, it will not accept payment for it.
Here's it in action. Note, the B is a M class ship added in with Timelines. Click the icon or the ship in the personal assets tab, right click any Wharf in the galaxy that isn't directly hostile. Enjoy credits.

Same with remote upgrading, which if I recall IS covered in the tutorial. If that isn't, then ship orders certainly are, given that it's basically the same system.
And yes. You can absolutely strand yourself at a station by selling the ship you're on. There isn't a means of selling a ship you're directly piloting mostly for that very reason, though it's also the same reason why you can't buy a captainless ship.
Do not ask me how I know that..... *coughs*
As for finding all those posts, none of them had this solution? Are we sure on that?
Are we seeing the problem here, or are we that desperate for Steam points?
I've had a hard time finding answers to specific questions myself...not because the answer is not out there, but because I get tired of reading dozens of search results without finding the answer....reading hundreds to finally find it is out of the question!
This game has had a very active community, apparently. So many search results for any combination of keywords you might search for, many of which don't address the specific thing you're looking for.
"How to sell a ship in X4"
Top two results from three years ago. One from Reddit, One from the Egosoft boards. Both saying the same thing.
The same thing, by the way, which is covered in the game's tutorial, and is two button clicks in a game that is similar to other types of functions. The only "confusing" part here is people commenting on sales prices for the ship, which is obviously not the matter.
Devil's advocate is fun. Not when you're assuming the user is blind, or doesn't know how to play the game. I can't assume either, given it's a private profile, but given that they've progressed into kitting out fighters, they either know already, or it's just one of those things that never crop up.
If we're being fair, we'd have to forget the fact this took them TWO HOURS to do, and not once did they look at the game. Some people forgive wilful ignorance or not having the confidence to experiment with things.
There's a reason we have RTFM, after all.
Shipyards buy and sell L/XL, Wharfs buy and sell S/M.
i was on the station you call wharf to sell a argon elite. this wasnt the problem.
sry, my english is very basic or bad.
