Ship color

Curious can you change your ship color/look or is there only one default color?

You can change the default color / skin for all your owned ships and you can also apply an override paintjob to specific ships (for example your favorite ship you personally fly around in).

You can get quite a few paintjobs from plots. Timelines also has some cool ones. You can also do missions for them although I've not done that for a while and not sure how many missions like that are available. I'm pretty sure someone will have a mod for them as well.

Some look really cool. Others not so much lol. They don't go well on Boron ships due to their bioluminescence although you may like it.

But how do you changd it? What menu is it under? Thought there would be an option in the shipyard but couldn't find it.

Need to go to a ship dealership and do it like you install mods.

If you already have some paints schemes, you can just left click on a ship, choose redesign, and youll find it there. And, can be done on the fly.

On the personal info menu, on the same tab where you can edit your faction's name and logo, there's a button to change all of your ships' colors in bulk (except for those you have redesigned as explained above).

Rightclick on the ship --> redesign.

Or in empire settings where you edit your name and logo.

They're referring to ship modifications, an in-game mechanic to improve your ships beyond just better equipment. One type of modification is special paints, but that's not necessary to change you ships' colors (see the other comments).

The game features "ship modifications". In the game mechanism. Paint to individual ships can be applied at the same screen. It is easier to just right click --> redesign, but that happens when NPC is piloting the ship. Or use Empire Settings.

I think one of the default colors you can pick is red.

There are two default red colors. Foundation Red and Cardinal. They interact with lighting differently. I think there are 8 default colors. Red, Green, Blue, Yellow and named versions of those.
