can be something as trivial as a water factory if you find a good spot for it. cheap and fast to set up and can still yield like a million per hour or so if there are enough med/food fatcories around that aren't properly supplied by AI.
once i'm a bit richer, is usualyl set up a hull parts factory since those are almost always in high demand (required for every station and every ship). stuff like advanced electronics and weapon components are also pretty safe bets.
going for TER tech is also an option. computronic substrate factories are one of the most reliable ways of printing lots of money
I'm sure you're going to hear about getting in on a the TER economic game from someone, or freighters and boarding destroyers/freighters early to build a cheap fleet.
Even minimum price Energy Cells can be lucrative on a small factory setup in a high sunlight sector. Each energy cell production takes 7~7.5 hours to pay for itself at 100% sunlight with no workforce at minimum price, ~4.5 hours at average price. Throw them somewhere with 700%+ sunlight and they almost immediately start printing money. Give it a workforce and you'll have your money back in cells in like 20 minutes. You'll flood the market but the instant profits will pretty much allow you to immediately pay for your next factories. Once you've got the full production chain going, you'll never want for money again either.
You now have the foundation for your industrial complex. At thst point work on refined metals, hull parts, antimatter cells, and engine parts. EVERYBODY always wants hull and engine parts.
Then i buy a couple cheap miners and set them up in TER space (Oort Cloud/Saturn) for some passive income, buy a Hermes Vanguard and go boarding L miners in NF2 or Silent Witness Xi.
After getting 2-3 of those i just reinvest the profits from my miners into more miners and eventually stations while doing the various plots and exploring.
I do similar to this, First derelict ship i get is the Drill from The Void then the Odyssey and now i go for the H with the last expansion.
Send couple of M size miners (Drill) at minimum preset cost 450k with couple of discount and hack you can get it down to 350k in Oort Cloud, Morning Star 4, Trinity Sanctum this sectors are safe of Khx to mine only silicon. also make dozens of Prometheus to bail in Morning Star and Trinity Sanctum to make them local autotraders in each factions capital to trade for Hull Parts, Claytronics or Smart chip and Advance Electronics depending on supply/demand. Also this Prometheus Pilots will be my first 3 star and with some missions for book will be my first 4 star pilots so i can move them to L traders and Advance autotraders as soon as possible.
Less easy missions. Try to get my rep up over 10 with everybody I can. Start dropping satellites (mostly small ones) around non-food stations. Very important to get coverage of ship building stations. Get going on the Terran/Yaki story. If there's anything that looks really profitable where my HQ is, start making that.
Get on everyone's war council or guild. (Suffer through hearing every voice actor repeat almost the same lines many, many times.) Start doing the war missions to purchase fleet. I still won't have much money, so I'll probably be doing 3 corvettes - and not with high-end loadouts - at first. Making stations earns a lot of cash, too, but takes longer. Money starts to really roll in at this point. All research short of teleporting the station should be done.
Finish the Terran/Yaki story. The Syn is, honestly, as much warship as I need. It holds plenty of marines so I can capture those thrice damned SCA pirates. Syn plus 3 or 4 captured pirate destroyers covered with anti-fighter weapons to escort is enough for me to destroy Xenon, if needed. Time to start looking at getting the Erlking.
At this point, I've probably picked out something BIG to do. Maybe one of the big faction quests or terraforming projects. That will take over strategy.
