Seems impossible with no customers .....

Don't make them for profit, there's no point. Ships rarely seem to visit to refit to begin with, and they can do it at your build facilities too, so you might as well skip over making EQ docks for any monetary purpose.
Use it to mass produce advanced satellites. I think they're one of the most valuable products in the game.
The problem is that any building Wharf makes money after a while , but the maintenance ones seem to be waste of money. This has to do with the game , they have not took care about it.
The maintenance versions are just cheaper things that do less. Rather than use them for money I'd actually just make them for their purpose: maintenance. For instance, adding an S/M maintenance module into a defence platform lets it repair subordinate ships.
You can do it cheaper by going to another faction one...
It's not for the money just the automation. I don't even buy the blueprint for these until money stops being relevant.
ONE thing that they're good for is making Erlking parts considerably cheaper than the shipyard.
Yes, and what Azunail said , it works. Make Adv Sat to a Builder and sell them, that can make some millions.
The main use of equipment station is equip your ship with whatever you want. You can make money with them, using satellite trading exploit. But normally a good idea would be to skip equipment station and go straight for the ship builder dock.

For selling satellites I recommend to set it to closed loop construction method. Closed loop recipes for some reason manufacture things for fraction of their normal cost.
I don't think it makes a big difference in this case. Advanced satellites cost 5 advanced electronics and 5 sensor arrays in universal and i think 3 claytronics and 17 hull parts in closed loop. Both also cost some ecells, but that's pretty much negligible.

So in both cases the price is roughly similar. Universal might even be a bit cheaper. And in both cases the materials are much cheaper than wgat you get for selling the satellites, so it is viable. But a bit tedious since you can't just queue up or otherwise automate the upgrades like you can with normal trading

Being cheaper to build and operate, maintenance bays are useful for building near the front lines of a conflict for you and your allies to stay repaired and restocked while keeping your larger and more expensive shipyards in safer sectors further away.

Have them on admin sensor array defense platforms for your patrol ships and police ships to use for repair/retock on closed loop.
