X4: Foundations

X4: Foundations

Ver estadísticas:
Does this game have space friction?
That is, will ships, objects, etc., slow down if they have no thrust?
Publicado originalmente por lnomsim:
Yeah, no, there is definitely space friction.
All ships have a drag factor.

It is better explained here: (mod that does reduce space friction and increase max speed)
https://www.nexusmods.com/x4foundations/mods/848

Nerdy considerations you don't need to read:
For what I understood, X4's physics work a bit differently than in Rebirth, where I made a similar mod even before v3.6 (when 'flight assist off' was introduced). Instead of having parameters for drift (which also relates to mass), there is a drag factor, which is the inverse. Also it affects top speed. It makes no sense because there is no friction in space, but there is no top speed anyway (and I did not mess with mass parameter to see how it effects physics). At the end it does not change much. But you can't have real full inertia, there is always some minimal friction at work even with flight assistance off. Nothing really visible

You can turn off flight assist when you're flying a ship to make it go newtonian. There is normally "friction", but that's because the ships are using their thrusters to bring you to a stop.

What about free objects in space, will they also slow down?

If I understand you correctly, turning off flight assist will also turn off the automated thrusters, right?

It has no Space friction you can fly forever at the same speed without adding thrust.
The ship itself will usualy control the direction with its thrusters but this can be toggled off. (flight assist).
(sniped)

Edit: object will slow down.

Finally, a space game that actually does space (mostly) right. Now to wait for a sale...

Alright, thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to decide between this and other space games, then. Lack of space friction was a big point in this game's favor.

Your best bet would be KSP.

I know there is also a battleship game with a softcell shader that uses a very good Newtonian flight model, but I can't remember the name.

But it doesn't have the depth of X.

You could try Elite Dangerous. There is no friction or slow down there if you turn off flight assist. There is a speed limit however but there are certain moons where you are even able to achieve a stable orbit if you turn off flight assist and have a sufficiently fast enough ship.

Then there is Kerbal Space Program that has relatively realistic orbital mechanics and space flight.

Also Evochron Legacy has real flight physics.

I know about KSP, but I also want to actually explore space (or a sci-fi interpretation of it) as my own character, not just send ships out there.

Yeah in my opinion, this game should not be looked at for space simulation factors. It has some interesting and fun space mechanics, but it is ultimately not as in real life. Example, Travel mode can boost you up to say 6 km/s - you turn it off, now you can drift at that speed for a couple minutes, gradually slowing to your max 'normal' speed (say 500 m/s), and then drift endlessly at that speed. Can turn around in the ship, go grab a coffee, doesn't matter. With Flight Assist off, you have to work to counter your own momentum.

Each ship does have a feel of mass and unique flight characteristics, for turning, roll, yaw, etc. Certain objects can be chucked out at speed, like satellites, but they will eventually slow and halt.

I don't want an MMO, though. That's why I never went into ED. I also don't like their microtransaction BS.

I did want realistic space mechanics, but it's not necessarily a requirement. It was just a big plus, if this game had them.

Maybe try Evochron Legacy. It has exploration, planet landing, base building and a realistic flight model.

Also you can play Elite Dangerous solo. There is a solo play option in the game menu where you won't play with other players.

I'll look into that, thank you.

What microtransaction BS are you talking about?
There are 2 DLC (two less than X4) and then only cosmetics you can buy by simply playing the game, something that wasn't possible some years ago.

And they are cheap. Even with real money.
