"Did you ever wonder how much precious energy your ship wastes while you're running simple errands? Are you losing sleep over the staggering logistical paradox of Energy Cell transports? Worry no more! We are currently assembling a report which will shine a light on this issue and revolutionise trading efficiency. You could help us by scanning ships for Energy Cells and transferring the collected data to us for some small compensation"
All you have to do is scan any ship that is carrying energy cells. Look for ships taking off of solar power plants or those named "energy trader" as they are most likely to be carrying them.
I do have a follow-up question though. You mentioned "within the space specified by the mission manager". The mission stated no location, that's what was confusing me.
Also worth to note: This mission seems to include most wares to scan for and is pretty easy to do if you have a high enough standing (reputation) with the "trespassing" ships of a faction as you can see the ship details, inclusive the current cargo from the info screen on the map.
The only "needle in the heystack" missions in this regard are the smuggle wares (spaceweed/spacefuel, etc.) which are always hidden, but can be narrowed down to ship types, which shouldn't belong to the faction which it is displayed for.
Example: ARG Food Transport Magpie -> Magpie is a TEL/MIN vessel and thus shouldn't be available for ARG -> this is a good hint for a cover up pirate vessel which is most likely to smuggle something!
