Save file issue?

Playing on Steam Deck. Played this morning. When I loaded up the game later, there was an error about not being able to find the executable, then the game updated, and ran fine. But my saves were gone.

So I started a new game, played for a few hours, then quit.

Now, I got the same executable error, the game updated (again?), and the earlier save files are back, but the newer ones are gone. Both manual and auto saves. Not that it matters, but the game has also lost track that I completed all the tutorials.

What the hell is going on?

Presumably Steam switched between the native Linux and Windows builds (twice).

To force one over the other, open the game's properties in Steam and under Compatibility choose either your preferred Proton version for the Windows build or Steam Linux Runtime for the native build.


You should be able to find your X4 userdata (including saves) in:

Linux: $HOME/.config/EgoSoft

Windows (if Steam didn't nuke it): PATH_TO_YOUR_STEAM_INSTALL/steamapps/compatdata/392160/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Egosoft
