New player, control remapping issues
Hi all, I've been playing games similar to this for years but only just got around to trying X4.
Countless hours have been spent in the likes of Freespace, Elite, Freelancer, Star Citizen, etc, and I have gotten very used to the way I have my controls setup over all this time So I wanted to try to sort of port over the same sort of control scheme here into X4.

I've immediately run into an issue. Normally I have Spacebar as upstrafe and Ctrl as downstrafe, but when going to change the controls, it seems X4 doesn't allow Ctrl as it's own independent button press. It only allows Ctrl to be used as a key modifier.
Shift has the same issue. I like using shift as a regular key and using Alt as a modifier.

Is there any way around this? A way to make the game allow things like Ctrl or Shift as independent key choices? Or would I need to look for a mod or something?

Edit: I should clarify that I am a M&K player, so keyboard controls are my only option really.
I like HOTAS for immersion, but I much prefer M&K for precision. (Usually a PvP pilot in other games)

While I understand your hardship I recommend making the C button down strafe and deal with the limitation.

I'd really rather not as then it severely limits range of motion, as if I was using C to downstrafe it would make it difficult to simultaneously strafe to the right as I couldn't easily hit the D key.

Isn’t there a setting that decouple shift?

Or am I going crazy

There might be? Couldn't see it at first glance. I was just going through the tutorials when I got to the flight one and had a sort of "oh, that's got to change" moment.
Had a quick look but couldn't see it.

If there is a way to make them usable, and I'm just blind, I'd be happy to know about it.

I’m still at work so can’t verify but I swear I seen the ability to make shift & crtl not modifiers

Do you use them as non modifiers at all yourself? I'll have another look later and see if I can see an option. With it being a new game for me I've probably just missed it somewhere.

I think the only remapping I did for this game was to change the full stop command from [Backspace] to [`] (the key on the left of [1]). (Too lazy... :steammocking:)

I found the option to change modifier keys. It's in "expert settings" at the very bottom so I just missed it. Just need to play around with rebinds now.

Glad you found it now I don’t need to check :praisesun:

Thanks for clarifying that it was there somewhere. I probably would have not looked for it again if you didn't.
