For example, right now I play a mining company, so I only do mining stuff with big mining fleets that go from sector to sector and mine for the one that offers the best price. Maybe later on I will expand the company into a steel producer with metal refineries, but I don't think so.
My last big safefile with about 500 hours was a Terran (Segaris) based medical company, and I produced medicine (and drugs ahem...) with many small stations all around the gate network.
Before that I was a pure trading company with trading stations in strategic places and big fleets of trading ships, trading goods all around and I didn't care about mining or military ships at all.
Before that I was a shipbuilder (because everyone wants to own a shipyard at least once, I guess).
It really depends on what you want to play and what you enjoy the most, you don't always have to do everything or look for the best way to make money because in the end you will be stinking rich no matter what you do.
The fabricator itself is relatively cheap and you can scale up the scope of the operation by simply adding more and more miners until the fabricator runs at full capacity - then you add another fabricator and again add miners etc.
Sure why not. You can even set up shop in Averice to benefit from the 1300% sunlight there. And if you make the questline you can become their savior by providing cheaper protection from the sun floods
If you take it over, you can assign it a pilot who will automatically mine and sell the resources to stations in the sector.
So, look for sectors with silicon asteroids and stations that buy silicon.
With the money you earn, you can expand your mining fleet and establish new ones in other sectors.
Once you've earned enough credits, you can build your own stations. If you have the TER DLC, buy or steal everything you need for a Computronic Substrate factory. There is no faster way to earn credits in X4.
Otherwise, supply the NPC shipyards and docks with everything they need.
