There is no such thing as i spend so much time to go back it's literary 18 billion -> Silent Witness -> Hactiva -> Prime -> Second contact -> The Void -> Getsu Fune and your back home. And half of those systems are on the highway so is less than 1 min traversing them from gate to gate, all it takes you to go back home is less than 10 minutes. But you wouldn't know it since you didn't explore.
The station you got is part of the main plot story and will be the gateway for getting access to the rest of the major plots missions. So ignoring it completely is not advisable but yes util you feel ready it can take the back seat. Get familiar with the UI especially pay attention to the two tabs with the missions. Some are local missions that come and go and the one on top has listed some that are part of a major plot and will stay there util you decide to trigger them and follow the multiple stages.
Since you have been teleport to the middle of the map on your way back to Terran territory you get one radio transmission the first time you get near the highway. Anyhow it ask you to go to the Trading Station in Hactiva this is actually the main plot of the game before any other Expansions where added. So if you want to follow the correct order of event's and open everything, focus on finishing this one first then go back to Terran. This mission is very important since it will give you the knowledge how to make use of your space suite bomb launcher and the making of bombs. And since the EMP bombs are the main avenue for a player to acquire station module blueprints than rather spending hundreds of millions of credits on blueprints.
And yes you can finish both the Hactiva and Terran Command plot missions in your starting ship. just keep in mind that F5 on your keyboard is the quick save so use it before you jump on multiple red targets and don't feel like dogfights are your thing just to be safe if something goes wrong.
