What is the AMD FSR rubbish?
Honestly it makes the game look ♥♥♥♥. AA barely works. FXAA turns the game into a blurry mess, MSAA barely does anything and SSAA is virtually a slideshow.

The AMD FSR just turns everything into a blurry shimmering mess. Honestly when I first loaded the game up I thought there had been a graphics downgrade.

The most visually appealing is FXAA x1 with AMD FSR well and truly OFF!

Isn't that how it's supposed to work? The game uses a lower resolution and just upscale it, of course the image get a little bit blurry. Do i get that wrong?

You are correct. It upscale using AI to create a result as close as possible to the original resolution at better framerates. Unlike NVidia's variant it's all software so the result isn't perfect but on the other hand it works on any kind of GPU.

AMD FSR trades higher fps for lower image fidelity.

Hmm why are you loading AMD FSR when you have an NVidea GPU?

FSR is a rival to DLS from what I have seen.

FSR runs with either Nvidia cards or AMD. DLSS only with Nvidia. But if you don't like it you can always turn it off :)

yep, won't look as good as native higher resolution, but performs like lower resolution but has better visual quality than the lower resolution. kind of a half step between better performance vs better graphics. really it's for people who shelled out loads of cash for 4k but then were pissed about the crappy performance.

With FSR it's not so "smeary" as it is with DLSS - and be honest, i can barly see any difference between FSR quality and native. Playing at 3840x1600. I appreciate the more FPS that comes with it.

FSR doesn't use AI for anything.. that's Nvidias DLSS you're thinking about.
FSR is just upscaling with sharpening. That's why it doesn't need active support from AMD (like DLSS needs from Nvidia to train AI profiles).
It naturally gives worse results than DLSS but is hardware independent and doesn't need driver support.

FSR is a technique designed to increase performance at the cost of visuals, it isnt an AA solution. The whole point of it is to render the game as lower res and upscale, desperately try to hide that its doing that, and yes the visual impact can be very noticeable.
DLSS is completely different (and vastly superior).

It's for lower spec computers. Its the same as Nvidia DLSS. If you have a good PC you're not supposed to turn it on.

Just look at some station that is 15-20km away and fly towards it... you'll see the difference. Though as you said, fps boost is nice. I will probably use it in places when it drops the most..
On my 1060 3GB at 1080p I get better frame rates, *much* better frame rates, using FSR set on "Quality" with 8x FXAA and all the eye candy turned on, reflections, shadows, la la, than I get with FSR off, and all the eye candy off. FSR gives an overall much better experience. I can see some of the tradeoffs, there's stuff that's, uhh, clearly blurrier?, with FSR on than off, but it's mostly the stuff I'm rarely looking straight at, when I'm just playing the game it's so far been a brilliant tradeoff every damn time.

Yes sure i see what you mean - but when you play in higher resolutions i really appreciate this kind of technology. And to be honest every frame is welcome in X4 - especially in the late game :)

have fun with tides of avarice folks

I hear you :). Though the game is not bound by the GPU really (maybe CPU, maybe sth else). So I doubt FSR will help us in the late game :(.

As an example: I just started a new game, got to Second Contact II Flashpoint and even if I set FSR to performance mode the FPS drops to around ~40. That's even when I switch to lowest graphics setting too... on 3090...
