KB/M user considering controller. Thoughts/input from anyone?

So, while I'd absolutely love to play this game with a HOTAS, realistically I just don't have the correct physical setup/space for it, so I've been using my keyboard & mouse. I don't own a controller. Never really have, either. Only time I've really used one was... 14 years ago?... playing with the family on a new XBox they had gotten back then. That said, I didn't find it hard to understand and use effectively. I was beating them all at Call of Duty.

Anyway, I've never really considered getting one before because I've always liked the wider array of "buttons" to use and be able to bind to functions with a kb/m. That said, I'm finding controlling a fighter in combat in this game to be... difficult like this. So I'm considering on getting a controller.

While I'm open to input from anyone, I'd really like to know if there's anyone who typically likes using a kb/m that made the switch to a controller with this game and what their thoughts are. Or other kb/m users that have found other effective strategies in making personally flying and fighting easier with the kb/m. I'm also curious to know if there's anyone that plays this game with both a controller and the kb/m. And as this game is apparently certified with the Steam Deck... is that worth it?

So yeah, if anyone has some thoughts for me, I'd appreciate it.
