After x4 7.0/Timeline they want to discuss(read discussion and do not spoiler whats comming and make teaser what will come) what new expansion will come to x4 sandbox mode. They will not try in next expansion a experiment mode like timeline and want go back to Cradle of Humanity DLC style.

More free update will come to X4 foundation. They will only charge for new Sector/new ships(not updated ships models like E Version)/ new expansion(story/faction). Good they don't need to make an X5 simply improve on this one and allow it to use more cores.

To those who don't know, "Project X26" is the title of the application Egosoft made to the German government to acquire funding from them for the development of whatever X26 is. Egosoft acquired ~2 million euros of funding for 3 years when it was approved in 2023.

X24 was Timelines, X22 was Kingdom End.

The only people who would know for certain what Project X26 are the devs and those subject to NDAs. So nobody else is going to know until they announce it, so it's kinda pointless to speculate.

I'll make a guess anyway. I think it's just a longer term grant just so they don't have to keep putting in a new application for every new DLC, with a near maximum amount they could get within the rules before having to pay well over 50% of the costs for themselves (Grants between 100,000 and 2 million euros mean that the company has to pay 50% of the costs, so the project in reality will cost ~4 million euros). They probably didn't do this before because the overall available government funds for the German gaming industry was smaller a few years ago and Egosoft were less experienced in acquiring such funds (or the German government were less experienced with understanding the needs of it's video game companies).

If I were to be very cynical, the implementation of generative AI and the competitive nature of Timelines were probably a means to make the biggest case for themselves when considering the "Cultural tests" that they have to pass before getting their funding application approved. Can't prove that though, and those aspects certainly haven't harmed the game in any way for me to be bothered about it.

Ahh now i know what is is i do not see the BMWK that mean for german the Political department for economy and climate protection (do not ask why they together). One part of the Department is funding Project. X26 means the year where this funding project end. Egosoft apply for the first 3 DLC (split vendetta/cradlle of Humanity/avarice) support from German goverment. They got i think over a Million. They applied for evry single DLC(first 3 dlc) funding money. They applied 2023 for 3 years of funding. It was accepted they got 2m for projects. ( They are around with extern personal 50 people)
That means they will do expansion to 2026.

DLC= new ships for atmospheres travel disign and faction like Min that have Economy placed on planet.

Well if you read the text of the description of the X26 projekt on the bmwk page it sounds exactly like a description of a new X game.
It does not sound like a DLC description.
So with such a big government funding, and developing timeline (01.04.23-31.03.2026 and the fact that they updated the engine in X4 already to their X tech5 version, I expect X26 to be X5.

If it is not X5 it has to be something else of equal huge size. I first guessed it maybe would be a console version of X4 but the project description states that it is developed for PC Windows and Linux so this isn't it.

Since its release date is set to 2026 we will maybe see 1-2 new DLC for X4 in the meantime.
