How to search for crafting wares
Game is asking me to craft something for a quest. Is there any way to search for crafting wares or do I need to manually visit traders?

Depending on what the game asks you to get. If they want inventory items and not wares, you get those from destroyed ships, lockboxes, or you simply buy them at a station. A couple of them you also get as a byproduct of mining (lodestones, unstable crystals, spaceflies). And some of them you need to craft from said items, like spacefly caviar.

If we're talking about quests where you supply wares for stations, those you need to buy from stations with ships.
Crafting wares like I said in OP. Materials to craft goods in the workbench. AFAIK there's no filter for that and the only way to find the materials is either stumbling into drops from enemies/lockboxes or visiting every trader. All of which are gambles.

Yep, that's how it is. Not everything is readily available, some things you just have to either find on random trader counters, or as a drop from enemies.

It's a sandbox. It's possible to go yourself and buy it. It's also possible to ask one of your traders to go and fetch that for you. It's possible to issue buy order and AI Faction will deliver it to your station. It's also possible and more fun you build the infrastructure and produce it in your factory.
There is also items that you can't make or buy. Items that are rare drops from killing enemy ships. Also items that are rare drops from activities like mining and illegal items which your pilots will not pick up whiteout player intervention. Items that are obtained only by doing missions as a reward. Items traded only if you visit a trader kiosk at a trader corner when landed at a station. Or black market trader found in bars than the usual trader kiosk and so on.

Is your question about a quest item? Or is it about how trade is done in general? Be more specific you mite get a better answer.

The best way to get plenty of them is to assign to a couple of fast fighters (Nodan Sentinel is good) to collect drops - deposit invetory with repeat orders , to areas that are fights . Very soon you will have every crafting item you need.

some can be found in drops, see nodan tip by dmansall, once you have teleport it is worth having small scouts parked at black market stations. others can appear near mined areas.
Depending on which you are looking for.
You would need to be more specific as to which ware.

i always use an Asgard, go into Xenon space, attack a station and bring everything out, i send a second Asgard in to help the first with fighter and corvette spam. i use the first one to take out, K's, I's and the occasional H. I make sure all of those just about get into weapons range and destroy them since the container magnet range is limited to about 10km.

The container will be pulling in crafting wares and modification parts for a while. that's one such idea though (and you don't need to attack the station anymore after the Xenon are triggered).

Which crafting wares? Fine meal? Xenon parts?

Established that when I asked if there's a way to FIND where to buy it

Can you ask your crew to buy crafting material? Please explain how I'd like to know.

Same as above.

I'm 1h in a mission with a starter ship. I don't own or have the resources to build a station and suggesting this as a solution for a 3rd mission in a starter quest is a tall order

Like I said in my OP, crafting material.

I think my OP was pretty straight forward and easy to understand. I could rewrite it but I doubt it would have a much different outcome.

It was one of the materials for a spacesuit hand bomb (forgot which one of them)

I've never seen an order like "collect boxes". Is it one of the "default behaviour" ones?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Nope, there is no default behavior for that. What they mean is use the "repeat orders" behavior, then order a ship to collect everything in a radius where there is usually a lot of action (like Hat Choice Xenon gate). Then you can either periodically teleport to the ship and ask the commander to hand in their inventory, or add an extra order to the queue for the ship to deposit their inventory at your HQ. But if you do the latter you will want multiple ships, so somebody is picking things up while the other ship is making their way to the HQ to deposit loot, those items disappear pretty quickly after they are dropped.

Ok, this answers my question then. Thank you.

I've never noticed any order that tells them to collect loot from wrecks and such. I'll keep an eye out for that next time I play.

I have never used it as I wasn't sure how effective it was or what scenario it works best in, now I know and will use it every chance I get.
