What do AI do with lockbox?

When I tell one of my AI pilots to pick up a lockbox, what do they do with it?

stick it up their ass.

They pick up whatever the contents are inside and it goes into their inventory which you can see in the ship info panel.

You can also prompt them to drop off whatever they have at your headquarters by right clicking on the ship and selecting the command.

can they get blown up trying to recover the loot? do police harras them if they are carrying... spice?

They blow it up. Never had one get a box successfully.

I'd expect it to be linked to the pilot's skill.

You need to give your lockbox recovery ship a small gun so it can pop off those locks. A good pilot also is a help.

I tend to keep such a ship following me ready for my instructions to grab a lockbox or crystal

Give the pilot an instruction to drop off the inventory, they'll take it to the HQ.

Or speak to your pilot directly and tell them to give you their inventory.
