What does the xenon research project do?

If your talking about the Drop from the H it gives you the ability to upgrade your captured Xenon Ships. The End Game Crisis is linked to Fleet Wide Sensors and has nothing to do with Xenon Weapons.

Is this specific research worth it?

I had no idea how exactly this was unlocked it just popped up.

It allows you to equipped the Xenon ships you capture and is not the EndGame Crisis. The Crisis is called Fleet Wide Sensors and alerts you that this research leads to end game crisis.

I took my time and collected the resources in the hopes I could upgrade the dozens Xenon S/M ships I captured.

As of 7.10 I cannot upgrade any of the Xenon components: Engines, Weapons, Shields, turrets. I can only change Thrusters which can be done at the NPC Wharf as well anyway.

I did the research before I had my own Wharf, so I don't know if I would have been able to change Thrusters before that research.

This being said, it appears the xenon ships come in a single load out that cannot be changed and they can be repaired (for free at an Aux ship) without the research.

That's incorrect info. When capturing xenon ship they often end up with broken, i.e. missing pieces. Shields and turrets. Without xenon research you cannot install weapons into those slots.

Regarding "upgrades", xenon do not have a whole lot of equipment in the first place. So its purpose is literally to make you able to produce their weapons.
