Also for ships is usually gud weapons to deal with boxes is impuls lasers and machineguns, and totally NOT torpedo launchers they have different purpoise!
There's a bug where if you target the lockbox then untarget, the aiming will remain fixed on the wrong spot, so you need to shoot into space once to 'unstick' that gun.
Then it's just being careful.
Hand laser also works if you're not confident, and also if you accidentally miss a lock and hit the lockbox, provided the gun isn't heavy enough to blow up the lockbox in one hit, you can repair it with your suit repair laser. (At which point you might as well shoot the rest of the locks off in your suit).
I generally have small, fast scout ship with one MK1 pulse laser and have them automatically pick up the lockbox. Very high success rate, and lockboxes just keep spawning so you never run out anyway.
Scrap ships need the processors, recyclers, and special ships from the Avarice people. Be aware that running these recyclers is EXTREMELY expensive on energy cells, and if you're in early/mid game where you can still sell them for more than 10 credits, it's almost never worth it to recycle scrap.
Surest way to open a lockbox is by hand laser, and taking time to repair the box with the repair tool between locks in case you do any damage to it with the hand laser.
Scrap ships either need to be towed to a station with a scrapping module (S/M ships) or cut up into chunks and taken to a station with a scrapping module (L/XL I think?). It's been awhile since I've played with the scrap mechanic.
Available in Avarice.
