Capturing tutorial?
Game mentioned (during a fight with a Xenon ship) that I should start a "capturing tutorial", but I don't see it on the list. Does it exist?

Lol... You're right, the tutorial doesn't seem to be listed for me either.

Okay, so the prompt first pops when your radar first spots an abandoned ship, check your map, there should be a ship nearby which doesn't list a faction and isn't moving. Depending on your map filter settings, it may be white, it may be blue.

Once you've located it, there are two ways to proceed.

Marine claiming: (Quick and dirty claiming)

If you have a marine on your ship (or other crew that you don't mind reassigning to be a marine) you can tell them to board the ship for you. This is much faster, but will usually damage the ship and destroy some equipment. I'm not sure if it can outright destroy a ship.

Fly close to the ship.
Target the ship.
Right click to open the context menu on the ship and select 'claim'.
The marine will jump into a pod, pilot over to the ship and get inside.

Job done, the ship is yours.

Manual claiming: (Slow, zero damage ship claiming)

If you want the most surviving equipment and lowest repair cost, doing things yourself is the way to go.

Fly close to the ship.
Exit your chair and head to the airlock, selecting 'use space suit'
Scan mode (shift +2) is useful here... You are looking for a data leak.
Once you have located the leak, either...
scan it (fly to 2m distance)
-or
repair it with your repair laser

Job done, the ship is yours. Don't forget to assign a pilot.

I prefer manual claiming, although it can be dangerous as some enemies will shoot at you in your space suit, and the ship you left is a sitting duck, even with a relief captain. (It takes about 5 seconds for the spare pilot to take a seat, only then will they respond to an attack)

I'm sure there are video tutorials about how to claim a ship out there... But hopefully a text guide will be enough.

thanks for the detailed explanation

Yep; ended up manually claiming it. I thought i'd have to go storm in (no idea with what weapon) but just found the data leak and claimed it.

It was a ship I was shooting at, though... I think... not sure if it was abandoned. There were many ships around so I might be mistaken.

surprised that this has not been fixed yet... Upping thread. As there does not seem to be a bug reporting thread in Steam to report it in.

just ran into it myself - Thanks for the detailed explanation.
February 2025. Still not fixed

It's an internal tutorial, not one of the game start tutorials. You get to it from your main play-through in the help section.... errr.... except they are all gone now!

(Might be just as well with that tutorial. Capturing empty ships via marine hurts the ship pretty badly. Though that is the only method that counts toward the liberator achievement.)
