Once the construction is done you can drop materials off at your station.
Also, if you go back to the station editor, you can see exactly how many materials are needed, how many have been brought, and if any ships are already bringing any materials they will be listed there as well.
You could also assign a few of your own trade ships (once you have them) to work directly for the PHQ itself. You'll have to hire a manager too, but once you do that the manager will automatically send those ships out to make purchases for you.
Once these are done, you can start collecting and delivering materials for your Research projects. I like to assign M sized cargo ships as Trader ships for my PHQ and they collect the materials automatically, provided you have enough Operating Budget assigned to your PHQ.

The video cleared up several misconceptions I had about crystals and persons of interest. At this stage of the game all info is helpful
It *is* the same storage that your station would use for other purposes, but it *is not* the building storage.
When you start a research and the resource is not yet configured in your storage, it will automatically *add* the orders (logistic overview) with the correct numbers required.
The only thing you need is to assign the budget to your station (not building budget) so that either 1. other NPCs sell the resources to you or 2. traders you have assigned to trade for the station (not building storage) buy it.
For 1. to work the offer price (typically automatically MAXED, if not set differently by you) must be beneficial in order for the NPCs to trade with you. And there must be available resource. If nobody has the resource in proximity, you might not get any sold obviously.
For 2. to work, your manager on the station need to have enough skill so that the assigned traders have the required RANGE to reach the available resources. You must have trade data about the stations, either by being in its proxity in the last ~4 hours or having a satelite near it. Otherwise if the station is not known to you or has no up to date prices, your traders won't see them as available and will not buy.
There is a 3. option to manually order your traders where to buy resources and then transfer it into your station storage.
Sounds like I need to find a better station manager as the one I have is only a one star.
Manually ordering my traders is not working, they won't leave the sector unless I escort them to where I want them to go. Not sure if the issue is broken game of stupid operator.
Later (when more ressources are needed) I use my L megatraders and supply the HQ manually. Just a couple of clicks and the L trader will bring enough stuff while I'm doing other stuff. Also, at some point (lvl 2 researches?) I usually have added all other storage types to the HQ.
It also is a good idea to get one or more L miners from the war missions - those with 2500 nividium on board. Later researches need a lot of this stuff.
