How to turn research materials in?
The only info I can find on the player collecting their own materials for research is 4+ years old. There was some special storage required IE not the station storage but I can not find info on building that in Foundations V7.

Have your ship trade it to your player HQ, no special storage required.

Well I am doing something way wrong then as my PHQ will not take them.

Your PHQ doesn’t have any storage space available. The first time you start research, you get a mission that tells you to build a container storage module on your PHQ. Go to the map, right–click on the the PHQ and choose Plan Build. This puts you in the station editor. Find the container storage blueprint in the menu at the left, and plop it onto your station somewhere. As Boso Ta will tell you, it doesn’t actually have to be connected to anything, but it does have to turn green. If it is red then it is intersecting some other part of the station or you have placed it out of bounds (which is all too easy). Move it around until it is green, then click Confirm Build over on the right–hand menu. Set your purchase price(s), add money to the station’s construction budget to spend on construction materials, and then hire a builder ship to come along and actually do the construction.

Once the construction is done you can drop materials off at your station.

That project has been under construction for the last 8 IRL hours, no bonus for getting the job done quickly.

Have you tried to expedite it at all? Gone out and purchased the construction materials to drop off in the build storage? NPC traders will bring the materials if you set the purchase price high enough that they can make a little profit on the trip.

Also, if you go back to the station editor, you can see exactly how many materials are needed, how many have been brought, and if any ships are already bringing any materials they will be listed there as well.

You could also assign a few of your own trade ships (once you have them) to work directly for the PHQ itself. You'll have to hire a manager too, but once you do that the manager will automatically send those ships out to make purchases for you.

Likely your building project for your PHQ container storage is missing materials like Hull Parts. You can right click and click on Build Storage to see what is needed/missing. You can then order any cargo ships you may have to purchase the materials and deliver them to your PHQ Building Storage. You can also check to see if you have enough money in the Construction Budget and the Construction Builder Ship you hired will purchase the materials for you.

Once these are done, you can start collecting and delivering materials for your Research projects. I like to assign M sized cargo ships as Trader ships for my PHQ and they collect the materials automatically, provided you have enough Operating Budget assigned to your PHQ.

I ran out of funds so construction stopped. Out scanning data leaks looking for cash that isn't going to get me killed or cost money I don't while trying to complete the task.

Scanning data leaks gets you criminal missions, which tend to be lucrative but dangerous. Capturing ships, killing folk, industrial sabotage, etc. The public missions might be a better choice for you. Repairing satellites, ferrying employees who missed their ride, taking down mine fields is surprisingly easy since there’s no time pressure, scanning a station can be easy or hard depending on where it is, etc, etc.

Easy missions easy money.

200k credits gets you a bare bones small miner, you can then go mine silicon (shoot the bright bits in scan mode and draw the cargo in), and make about 250k every 10 minutes. If you drop a resource probe or satellite down next to an asteroid, you can cruise back to that probe/satellite and go at the same asteroid. It will regen most if not all of it's nodes by the time you get back.

Thank you!
The video cleared up several misconceptions I had about crystals and persons of interest. At this stage of the game all info is helpful

You need container storage on your station for most items, for nividium you need solid storage.

It *is* the same storage that your station would use for other purposes, but it *is not* the building storage.

When you start a research and the resource is not yet configured in your storage, it will automatically *add* the orders (logistic overview) with the correct numbers required.

The only thing you need is to assign the budget to your station (not building budget) so that either 1. other NPCs sell the resources to you or 2. traders you have assigned to trade for the station (not building storage) buy it.

For 1. to work the offer price (typically automatically MAXED, if not set differently by you) must be beneficial in order for the NPCs to trade with you. And there must be available resource. If nobody has the resource in proximity, you might not get any sold obviously.

For 2. to work, your manager on the station need to have enough skill so that the assigned traders have the required RANGE to reach the available resources. You must have trade data about the stations, either by being in its proxity in the last ~4 hours or having a satelite near it. Otherwise if the station is not known to you or has no up to date prices, your traders won't see them as available and will not buy.

There is a 3. option to manually order your traders where to buy resources and then transfer it into your station storage.

I managed to find some good crystal patches and bought a miner so hopefully I can generate more income to finish the storage and off load the research materials I picked up.
Sounds like I need to find a better station manager as the one I have is only a one star.
Manually ordering my traders is not working, they won't leave the sector unless I escort them to where I want them to go. Not sure if the issue is broken game of stupid operator.

Too many years playing ED I expect a ship to be outfitted with at least the minimum required equipment to do the intended job. Half way across known space I discovered my shiny new miner doesn't have weapons or drill. Back to farming crystals to afford the equipment to make it work.

I usually slap two S container modules on the HQ and assign some TEL Osprey drone boats as traders to the HQ manager. Scouting the surrounding sectors and place satellites to supprt the manager to find trade offers more easily helps. For the lvl1 researches it is enough to just give the manager enough money and get the researches done.

Later (when more ressources are needed) I use my L megatraders and supply the HQ manually. Just a couple of clicks and the L trader will bring enough stuff while I'm doing other stuff. Also, at some point (lvl 2 researches?) I usually have added all other storage types to the HQ.

It also is a good idea to get one or more L miners from the war missions - those with 2500 nividium on board. Later researches need a lot of this stuff.
