How do I claim a ship?
I found a Xenon ship that can be claimed.
A message poped-up about a tutorial for claiming ships but I can't find it in the tutorials list.

Okay, the most reliable way is to hop out of your pilot chair
Go to the airlock in the back of the ship and "use spacesuit."
Once you're in your space suit, activate scan mode (Shift + 2)
Fly over to the abandoned ship and look for a data leak
Either scan (fly really close to) or repair (with your repair laser) the data leak
The ship is now yours, either dock with it and fly it away, or assign a pilot.

The data leak will look like a little mass of electronics, with scan mode active, there will be a noise coming from it and a glowing / pulsing red light and some effects to make it easier to spot. If you know how the ship is built? it'll be near the air lock. (usually on the centre line of the ship somewhere).

Good luck!
Alternative: if you have marines on your ship you can select the target ship open context menu (mouse / or F default bind) and then press "claim".

I did not verify that, but people have said that claiming like that damages the hull of the target ship more than manually claiming.

FYI: claining ships will "eraze" some of its initial equipment... Its random what remains. If the manual / auto claining also affects that, that might be a reason to manually claim, but otherwise the hull itself is often times cheap to repair not worth the time.

When after a battle there are 10 ships around, I don't manually claim them... One even faster way if you have a ship with a lot of marines is to get up of your seat and order your relief pilot to claim the ships via MAP. Then you don't have to fly to the ships yourself to "claim", because the NPC will send the marine pods directly to all those ships. Fast to claim a lot of ships after a battle.
Lalala speaks truth, you can claim with marines, although there is risk of damage to the ship and it's equipment (I have seen both hull and equipment damage) ...

The damage is less with higher skilled marines, I understand.

Whilst marine claims are very much faster, I don't like the damage it causes... so I'll tend to personally claim ships.

You can also set your 'global orders' to 'claim abandoned ships' If your mining ship, explorer, or whatever, has extras crew, they will comm you and claim the ship. You can even order one of your ships to the abandoned ship location and let them claim it without you needing to even enter the sector. Once claimed you can then order the ship to repair at a wharf or shipyard.

Edit: PS. My miners find abandoned ships fairly regularly in sectors with high conflict.

If that also affects equipment, yes. At least for valuable shis, maybe modded. Like those from dukes (prometheus, etc). But I also had fights with a lot of VIG S ships, kyd, etc 5-10 after a fight just in space. It would be tedious to fly to them and manually claim.

They usually have a lot of deployables inside, so I claim them fast, send all at once to a wharf or equipment dock, and then *upgrade* ships ALL at the same time, sell all the deployables and buy the needed equipment, usually I even get money back because the deployables were more valuable to sell, than buying the new equipment. For me at some larger scale the time I save, I can go to next fight and claim even more. But for some rare/special ships I would do manually, or at the beginning of the game.
This is nice to know, thanks!

A pilot of mine informed me about an abandoned ship. I tried to claim it, but did not let me. This data leak scanning way helped me into its system and was able to claim it.
Much appreciated for the detailed help.
