btw, make sure to adjust the autosave intervals in the game settings.
Better to restart, and maybe spend the early game scouting around to try and find a friendly wharf and some money... Some basic ships are much cheaper than others, so shop around.
There are also some abandoned ships out there in space, but finding one when all you have is a space suit? No fun... But you can get most of 'em right from the start of a game if you know where to look.
