Difference between a Satellite and an Advanced Satellite?
Advanced ones are much more expensive but how are they better?

Aha! There's an Encyclopedia in the context menu. 30 vs 75km range.

At game start, it's best to use Satellites unless a mission specifically calls for it. Advanced Satellites are very expensive.

Once you're rolling in trillions of credits later, you'll be dropping advanced satellites like you're bowling at full speed.

I only ever use advanced satellites and I only put them near Xenon gates. I find I can make loads of credits before I buy trading rights from a faction which makes all satellites redundant except those placed by Xenon or enemy gates.

Simply put you don't need them other than for the Xenon which you should use them for. But for trading and making credits? No. Your miners and traders should have trading extensions so when they're in a sector they act as satellites and you don't need them and you certainly don't need them when you get to 20 rep and buy their trade routes which shows you trade data on every station a faction owns even if you haven't discovered it. You can gain rep very quickly now just by doing a few missions and having miners in their sectors and using your own traders from your station that are near to that faction.

It's never been easier to gain rep in this game. Enjoy it while it lasts as I'm sure it's not intended.

Satellites coverage is very useful when hunting for specific boardable ships.
SCA L ships for example. Combine coverage with a custom alert and you'll always know when a free ship appears.

Advanced satellites are recommended for some satellite coverage missions. Where the area needed to be covered about matches that of one advanced satellite.
