Also, if you're learning, don't play the current beta since it's still buggy.
I have a couple questions for you if you are willing.
1. What mining ship? ore or gas?
2. What resource are you trying to mine for?
3. Is the ship equipped with the right load out to be able to mine?
4. Have you set out a resource probe?
5. Are you collecting anything in the ships cargo hold or is it just flying around?
6. Do you have sector travel, sector activities, trade restrictions set to off for the ships individual behaviors?
7. Have you found a station that is buying the good that you are mining?
8. Does the ship give you a specific error message on the behavior tab?
According to the encyclopedia entry for The Reach the only natural resources are ore and sunlight. Setting out 4 resource probes also confirms this in my current game seed.
Instead what I use is repeat orders. This is simply more effective and ensures that the miner should keep selling - setting sell price to rock bottom will keep the ship mining and selling until the stations demand runs dry (some places aren't in danger of demand running dry early on, esp with S/M miners.
Thing with automine is that they have to be able to sell everything in one load. This is usually what causes them to break - they can't find a sale. I've also noticed that manually micro'ing new miners tends to increase the chances they stick to a mining order well.
I would recommend trying Repeat Orders instead of automine.
Yea this has been my issue.. which sucks.. Whole reason I never played this game despite buying it when it first came out was constant bugs like this.. Now I come back and still the most basic stuff broken..
"But its 7.0 Beta!" Yea... there isn't a reason this should be broken...

This is just advice.
as is my advice. which I gave in the previous message. It was also found not only by me. Just forget that you are playing a normal game. And constantly change the place where you want to achieve something. If you see 0 impact from your actions in the sector.
I figured out a fix for this problem :D
1. Mine
2. Sell at Station X for price Z.
The station is buying for 88.
The repeat order let me set the minimum sell price to 89 only.
So the repeat orders don´t work either.
