Sounds like what it says, eg no story to follow but just an open gameplay into the X sandbox universe.

That's beta, yeah. There's Play Tutorials, Play Timeline, and Play Open Universe. That's where the Load Save Game option has gone.

That is the usual "New Game" option we have on current stable version, kinda.
Just click it and you will see the usual start options.

I don't remember there being online before? Or at least not the point of making an Egosoft account and timelines. Lots of cool new stuff it seems. But I also don't follow the game when I don't play so I might have missed some dev blogs

Timelines are short individual activitys which stands for its own, are not connected to the 'open universe' where you have the standard sandbox and where you can unlock different unknown stuff for the standard universe what you can use there.

Sounds interesting and is maybe something like a racing mode, arena mode or whatever.
