Best turret focused L or XL ship?
Hey folks.

Wondering what you guys would recommand as the "best" L or XL ship with turrets.
Meaning... Either I could afford 1 XL, or 3 L, but turrets focused is a most. Looking for a decent escort for something like an Asgard. I can fly it and aim at enemies capital, but I need a decent escort to fire on flocks of S, M and L ships. Any recommandation?

Welp, honestly if you're looking to swat smaller ships, I would look at something that can just mount a bunch of laser turrets if you're looking to avoid friendly fire, or flak if you don't care so much... More turrets = better.

Another asgard is the simple solution, or a bunch of syn if you want to cover all angles (although that involves more micro when a big target appears)

Probably the best anti-fighter cloud option is to have a fighter cloud of your own, or, a carrier... The raptor being the gold standard there, with enough space to hold a spare wing of bombers in case you don't fancy pressing the Asgard's I win button.

If you're looking for vanilla? I find for anti fighter duties, I find that any of the Odysseus line is absolutely adequate... And the Oddy Vanguard (Or sentinel) even works as a ghetto carrier.

Probably many peoples will recommand argon flak for M turrets and paranid plasma for Large turrets.

If you wanna go overkill against S and M ships, you can deploy a Raptor with its ~100 turret slots ;)
The best destroyers against swarms imo are the Odysseus E and the Osaka. Odysseus comes with the advantage that you can dock a gunship, Osaka has better shields.

I just use all those Phoenix destroyers that I board when the SCA pirates with them. Large beam turrets, flaks facing all directions, and three engines so it's harder for the enemy to knock out engines. Good for escorting L miners, too. (Kha'ak can't kill an L miner, but they can sure stop it from going into travel mode.)

Enemy L ships? So not Xenon?

A Behemoth 5er (preferably in cross formation) can both kill a K and kill the flies due to the cross fire of the turrets. (L Plasma, L Beam, M ARG Flak / M Beam)

SCA also sometimes "offer2 them (in fact I have an alert setup to just collect SCA Behemoths :lunar2019laughingpig:). It's all about personal preference - but I do like Behemoths more then Phoenix destroyers.

XL I don't use that many in active combat. But it's awesome to field a Raptor with L Beams / M Beams. It just cuts through any S/M attack and is quite a sight, too. Asgards just delete everything, no matter what weaponary. Even more so when in player hands.

Three Rays, with their turrets capable of slowing down fighters, making fighters easy targets for Asgard's L turrets, and their main weapons able to slow down capital ships, significantly ease battles.

I have taken my ray into swarms of 20-30 fighters and watched its pulse/arc turrets slap em out of space on its own. Shields never so much as twitched.

I like to use its big fat laser booperdooper to take out P's but its not strictly neccesary.

I'm doin a pure boron playthrough, but if you paired it with a more traditional heavy hitter it'd probably be utterly unfair.

Asgards can definitely get overwhelmed by swarms in high attention. I've had that happen to me while sieging a Xenon station and I had to bring in a Raptor, so I could repair the engines and move it out. It needs a lot of Xenon gunships to do it, but it can happen. Even putting a Jian with flak turrets on the dock didn't save it.
The only ship that can reliably destroy an unlimited amount of enemies of any size is the Erlking, due to its combination of speed, range, accuracy and durability (although it would probably struggle against multiple Asgards).

Three Rays will probably cost you more than a Raptor though and will be less effective at taking down fighters...

The Raptor is better off being piloted by the player themselves, as it only possesses one engine and one shield, making it quite fragile when controlled by AI.
In terms of price, they should be comparable, but acquiring a Raptor from SPL can take an eternity.

Thanks for all of you guys recommandatins, going to compare all your ideas and figure out which one I'll take!

I usually leave the anti-fighters to M turrets, specifically ARG Flak that do a pretty good job at it.
It's a bit less optimal against M ships obviously but it still works against those too.

Even the free odysseus is pretty decent against swarms of fighters when equipped with those flak turrets.

I find beams a bit too weak for my tastes, even if they have better precision.

Yeah, I always find myself either annoyed that beam turrets do too little damage, or other turrets don't spend enough time actually hitting targets... Somehow fielding a mix of both feels like the worst of both worlds too.

What would be great would be L and XL turrets that can slow down a targetted S/M ship.

The game definitely lacks in terms of "electronic warfare" from games like eve online, there are a few weapons that have effects like slowing down targets they hit but it is only for S ships (perhaps M as well, not sure).

That is exactly how it works in Eve Online. They nailed down combat so its interesting. However its a pay to win game so all the good ideas are for nothing.
