Another asgard is the simple solution, or a bunch of syn if you want to cover all angles (although that involves more micro when a big target appears)
Probably the best anti-fighter cloud option is to have a fighter cloud of your own, or, a carrier... The raptor being the gold standard there, with enough space to hold a spare wing of bombers in case you don't fancy pressing the Asgard's I win button.
If you're looking for vanilla? I find for anti fighter duties, I find that any of the Odysseus line is absolutely adequate... And the Oddy Vanguard (Or sentinel) even works as a ghetto carrier.
The best destroyers against swarms imo are the Odysseus E and the Osaka. Odysseus comes with the advantage that you can dock a gunship, Osaka has better shields.
Enemy L ships? So not Xenon?
SCA also sometimes "offer2 them (in fact I have an alert setup to just collect SCA Behemoths
XL I don't use that many in active combat. But it's awesome to field a Raptor with L Beams / M Beams. It just cuts through any S/M attack and is quite a sight, too. Asgards just delete everything, no matter what weaponary. Even more so when in player hands.
I like to use its big fat laser booperdooper to take out P's but its not strictly neccesary.
I'm doin a pure boron playthrough, but if you paired it with a more traditional heavy hitter it'd probably be utterly unfair.
Asgards can definitely get overwhelmed by swarms in high attention. I've had that happen to me while sieging a Xenon station and I had to bring in a Raptor, so I could repair the engines and move it out. It needs a lot of Xenon gunships to do it, but it can happen. Even putting a Jian with flak turrets on the dock didn't save it.
The only ship that can reliably destroy an unlimited amount of enemies of any size is the Erlking, due to its combination of speed, range, accuracy and durability (although it would probably struggle against multiple Asgards).
Three Rays will probably cost you more than a Raptor though and will be less effective at taking down fighters...
In terms of price, they should be comparable, but acquiring a Raptor from SPL can take an eternity.
It's a bit less optimal against M ships obviously but it still works against those too.
Even the free odysseus is pretty decent against swarms of fighters when equipped with those flak turrets.
I find beams a bit too weak for my tastes, even if they have better precision.
Yeah, I always find myself either annoyed that beam turrets do too little damage, or other turrets don't spend enough time actually hitting targets... Somehow fielding a mix of both feels like the worst of both worlds too.
The game definitely lacks in terms of "electronic warfare" from games like eve online, there are a few weapons that have effects like slowing down targets they hit but it is only for S ships (perhaps M as well, not sure).
