Only X4: Discovery Packs
Are there no way to buy just X4? I don't think I'm going to get the Timeline DLC considering what people have been saying about it

edit: nevermind, following the link to x4 in any pack just leads back to it's main store page. RIP to new players who don't want timelines I guess, damn.

X4 + Timeline will be the "new" basegame, it also makes sense in terms what it add to X4

It would be the same price so doesnt make much sense to just have the base game. You have Timelines and can have a go at it for yourself and ignore if you dont like it. There is no gain to not have it.

Well, looking at the bundles, the foundation price itself is lower than discovery pack, so I wonder if I could just get that instead of the discovery pack.
If that isn't possible, guess I'll just finish X3 and farnham first

Smells like someone wants to push sales numbers by merging Basegame and DLC "for limited amount of time" aka as long as its featured on Steams mainpage:steammocking:

But it's optional to play. I have the base game (no Timelines DLC), but I'm pretty sure all the code and assets for Timelines is there as part of update 7.0, it's just "locked way" until I buy the DLC. Timelines doesn't prevent me from playing X4 like I always have.

What I do think was a mistake by Egosoft is to build in a DLC that many people may actively dislike, because new players may base their opinion of the entire game solely on their Timelines experience, especially it Timelines is being marketed for new players. This may inadvertently hurt the overall user rating of the game, because these players may never even give the "actual" X4 Foundations game a fair try. One might argue that, at least from a first-impression standpoint, that integrated Timelines turns X4 into X-Rebirth, which is a shame. Again, I know playing the Timelines is totally optional, but will new players?

This is not correct at all. DLCs may use assets form the base game but any new DLC specific assets are only avaible once the DLC has been added and downloaded.

I knew that was the way with regular, truly optional DLC, but is it this way with Timelines? Timelines is part of the base game now, at least for those who buy it new. Does this mean my base game is physically smaller (space on hard drive) than someone who buys the base game today? That seems very odd.

No you are conflating two different things. Timelines is SOLD with the Base game, but its still a DLC, so it adheres to all the same rules as any other DLC.

Okay.. Well in my defense it's an easy conflation to make, LOL. Still, it's a mandatory download and install, right? Or is it separate in that regard as well? What I mean is normally when I buy a DLC on Steam that's truly downloadable content (many DLCs these days are just keys that unlock content already installed), I don't actually have to download that content until I want to. Is this the way with Timelines?

If it's truly optional in all regards (except ownership), then OP really has no complaint to make, even less so than with my original hypothesis.

EDIT - it seems weird to me that something totally optional in all regards is a mandatory purchase now... Hence my initial confusion!

24€ for X4 foundation + timeline DLC is VERY cheap!

Even the pack with all DLC for less than 50€ is VERY cheap!

You will probably spend dozen hours on the game, more probably hundreds hours!

The Timeline DLC is a good way to learn to play the game before jumping in the sandbox!
