Secondary weapons

Ok so I am not quite understanding the distinction between secondary and primary weapon configurations.

The configurations themselves are clear. Mix and match which of your weapons fire together. But why have the distinction of primary and secondary if its just always the same weapon? From what I understand you can just as well have 8 configuration slots ?

Or am I missing some kind of feature here?

Suppose your ship is equipped with some bolt repeaters and a guided missile launcher. If you set the bolt repeaters in the primary and the missile launcher in the secondary, they are both active at the same time and you can fire missiles at your discretion at any time without having to stop firing your machine guns. If you set both as primary weapons but in different groups, you need to deactivate one to use the other.

Primary/secondary just gives you two different groups that you can fire with different keys.

IMO groups are for range, eg you dont want waste your bolters in cqb, when shards will do much better job. Groups are for weapons you want to time precisely, missiles, plasma, paranid sniper etc.

primary is for the right stick index finger trigger and secondary is for the left stick index finger trigger. I usually put primary weapons on the right side of the ship and secondary on the left

As per Egosoft: "Weapons assigned to the primary weapons system will try to automatically follow the selected target while those assigned to the secondary weapons system will try to follow the cursor."
