Do factions grow?
I think i found out in starsector they are just static but a game like cosmoteer you'll eventually see borders changing and factions advancing or becoming extinct..so was wondering if that is in this game

Yes, but not very much. There are a few wars between factions, and that can lead to change in borders, as well as factions taking control of some uninhabited sectors and (if they're strong enough) "liberating" some from the Xenon.

They grow, but it seems like there are some areas they don't expand past. For instance, I haven't been able to convince factions to move into certain wiped xenon sectors.

From what I've seen, the only faction that can truly grow is Xenon. At least if left unchecked by the player.

If you feed the universe ore and silicon then the factions will not make as many miners (they'll eventually die off for one reason or another). If you switch to fueling your own empire then the factions will likely be crippled for a while. Then the Xenon steps in, or whatever faction wasn't starved for resources when you stopped fueling them.

Used to be HoP and Ant grew like crazy. I think there's a limit to their expansion, though.

There's a hard limit to number of ships and number of stations each faction can have. Player has no limit, just CPU.
unless you actively help a faction they won't grow much they do build station and stuff but sometime ask you to build one for them and give you money for it (quite worthy if you ask me ) unfortunatly most of the faction stay in defensive mod some even let themself destroy by other ( exemple i have 18 billion the teladi sector overrun by VIGOR and guess what they let's themself destroy )

I had argon take quite a few sector from ZYA

I also think it depend on faction relationship

Like Boron and ZYA will actively try to kill each other and take over each other sector
But some of the faction wars are only military assets and they don’t really aim for civilian assets
which is why it take forever to actually expand with those war

Yeah but if you supply too many liquids, solids, or trade then the factions will eventually not replace lost miners and traders as you begin filling a significant portion of their needs. Once you start ship building and switch everything over to a full closed loop, you risk crippling whatever factions you trade the most with.

Next thing you know Xenon and Kha'ak are every where unless you help fight them.

I learned this the hard way when I switched over all my traders to fill in my own shortages. 90% or so of my ST's/ UT's are fueling my own empire, and I switched them all over in the span of 48 hours game time. It didn't take long before Argon, Godrealm, and Teladi were all struggling to rebuild ships and Teladi was reduced to four sectors at one point. It took a long time and a lot of Rattlesnakes to help build them all back up.

As for expanding. Not so much. At least not that much bigger than they start out as unless one of them loses sectors then the others may claim it. If you unite Godrealm and Holy Order then that's about as big of an expansion as you'll likely see. Aside from the obvious Xenon, should you literally do nothing ever.

Edit: The problem is all it takes is a single defence disk/ bridge. Factions tend to have to throw everything, a kitchen, and the sink at just a single defence module to kill it. Now imagine a sector with stations that have more than one on each of them.
