You haven't done anything wrong it's just the pace of the game.
Try using travel drive.
When I use travel drive, the max speed on my starter ship is 2500~m/s. While many times the distance from some random space station somewhere in the sector to the closest jump gate or highway is often 250km+. Considering the time it takes for travel engine to charge, that's over 100 seconds.
In X3, some generic fighter ship would have 180m/s. No travel drive, but you got SETA x10. So that's 1800m/s. Distance between the opposite gates of a sector ranges from 30 to 80km. That would take me only 16.6 to 40 seconds to travel.
I am clearly doing something wrong, if you say X4 is faster.
No one should be surprised by such posts.
Well, you are not, you're just starting out.
You can upgrade to better engines in X4, you start off with MK1 engines and they go up to MK3 (MK4 for combat, Split). The difference is substantial and you can also add ship modification for even more speed.
Each race has different engines with different stats. The fastest ship without ship modifications is the Irukandji (Boron), it can reach 10 km/s in travel drive with MK3 engines.
Once you craft SETA, you can do travel drive and SETA at the same time, which is crazy, buggy and not intended.
Ships are "faster" in X4
The pace of the overall Game is Slower.
For me personally X3 was just perfect. When travelling within sector, you have 10-30s to zone out and think about how petty our lives are in this vast universe.
X4 is different to X3. In some aspects it's "slower" and in some aspects it's "faster". The trick is not to expect it to be the same as X3. A few examples:
* In X4 you use Travel Drive, not SETA. In the early game this is slow. However once you get a decent player ship (something like a Katana for example) and mod it's engines up you are looking at 8-10,000 travel drive speed. That does not feel slow at all. It's actually faster than a Kestral in X3 with x10 SETA on. Now of course the sectors in X4 are huge compared to X3 so that makes a difference but on the other hand they are also very much more interesting to fly around and look a whole lot prettier, so..... Virtually nobody uses SETA in X4, it doesn't feel right and a good well modded M class ship is plenty fast enough once you get used to it. Some are so fast they are positively dangerous.
* Developing your business was much more of a grind in X3 than it is in X4. In this respect X4 is much "faster".
* On the other hand building stations is much "slower" in X4 since only one module can be installed at a time per station and they take an average of 20m real time to complete. Unlike X3 you can't use more than one Mammoth to bang modules on a station by the dozen in minutes. This means the X3 idea of the "mega-complex" doesn't really work well in X4. Typically you build smaller single product production stations and set up complex supply chains using the much more sophisticated automated trading system in X4. Because that way when you want to ramp up production you can add modules to many individual stations in parallel which is way faster. Owning your own fleet of Mammoths is not really a thing in X4 as there's no real reason to.
As I say it's just a question of treating X4 as different in certain respects. Coming stright from X3 you will notice these differences and they be a jolt. But you very quickly get used to them and most folks consider X4 the superior game now.
Using SETA is also a bad idea until you understand the economic repercussions. NPC economies can only function to a certain degree without player intervention.
