How to assign a Commander, to my ships.
I am very new to this game, so I guess that starts off on a bad foot. But for almost an hour, I bought a Mining Ship, and trying to get it to do work for me. It has a Captain, but no Commander, so it just sits in the Station. It said it needs a commander? There is no place for me to order a Commander. So far this is the worst game I ever bought, to do anything is worst then pulling teeth. I tried to find and to do the Tutorial that might be here, but not able to find it.

The only positions available on any ship, as far as I am aware, are the Captain, the Service Crew, and Marines. There can only be one captain, but most ships have room for at least a few Service Crew or Marines. As far as I know there is no position called a “commander” in the game. Maybe if you take a screenshot of whatever told you to give it a commander it would clear things up.

A ship gets a commander when you set it as a subordinate of a station or another ship. To do this, select the ship on the map screen, right-click on the "entity" that you want to be its commander and finally choose what you want the ship to do.

For in-game tutorials, press [H].

Oh, it's in the behaviors tab. Just choose local mine, select a resource, select a sector and you are good. Normally safe sectors that both have silicon and refine silicon are the best targets for just making money. Commanders are for fleets and they can work for civilian ships but they are completely restricted to just the mimic command.

I could send in a screen shot, but I have no knowledge on how to place a screen shot here. Of course I would have to take the screen shot first. This is a mining ship, I tried to set it to station, not able to. I tried to right click the ship to set it station, not able. Tried to set orders to mine, but no order to be found that tells the captain to mine ore and then sell.

I have been gaming sent, the late 1980's. Then got my first PC in the 90's, now have my 5th build PC, and been gaming average 18 hours a day, of course I am retired (66 Old), so no Idiot. But this game is a pain, to learn. Even played Eve on-line, for 13 years, was very easy to learn. There not much out there o YouTube, to help with the learning, must be to new.

I bought mining ship to the work for me,, and was hoping to get more ships to do the work.

If you thought Eve was easy this should be a breeze :steamhappy:

But, everything is in different places than you're probably expecting and most things are probably also backwards from what you expect.

For example, you can't assign your ships to somebody else's stations or ships except for very basic things, like "follow."

Not all commands are given the same way either, just to keep you on your toes. You have the commands you can see when just clicking on the map with any of your ships selected, then you have the default orders, and the defend/trade for/etc.. commander. And then there is "repeat commands" which you actually have to set as the default behavior (I know, right?) before issuing the commands to repeat.

The good news is, once you do get used to it you'll have a lot of fun trying to sort out how to do it better. There are some decent guides and YouTube videos, just try to avoid any that are older than 2022 and if you don't want to spoil any of the discovery of the game for you, try stick to ones that are very specific like "how to set-up an auto miner" or something similar.

By default Steam’s keyboard shortcut for taking a screenshot is F12, but you might have changed it to something else. Take a screenshot, then upload the screenshot to Steam (you can do that from the Steam overlay without even leaving the game). Once you upload it, click the “View Online” button. It will open a window that shows the Steam page for the image you just uploaded. Copy that URL and paste it into your next post here.

To make a miner work for you, all you need to do is click on the ship, either on the map on in the property list on the map screen, then open the Info panel. The Info panel for the ship has a number of interesting tabs, but the one you want is called Behavior. Go down to the very bottom section of that tab called “Default Behavior”. Choose AutoMine (which has no skill requirement, so the ship’s captain doesn’t need any stars at all). Pick a material for them to mine and a sector to mine it in, then click confirm. Done.

Commander actually just refer to either the station that the subordinate ship is assigned to to, or the Ship that the subordinate ship is assigned to.

This worked ,, ships is off and mining,, awesome,,, But next question, what is best ore (item) to mine,, I told it ore, but Ice and 2 others were also there to mine?
db48x Apr 26, 2023 @ 10:27pm
Local AutoMiners won’t leave the sector to mine or sell their goods, so tell them to mine whatever there is a buyer for. If there is an Ice Refinery, mine Ice. If there is a Silicon Refinery, mine Silicon. Ultimately though you will want to be mining everything. Don’t forget about gas mining either.

Thanks,, I am mining "Nividium" first,, but riding along with ship as a passenger, just see it done. Not able to see how much is in cargo, which is a drag. Want to get back to station, to get a few more small miners out working.
db48x Apr 26, 2023 @ 10:37pm
You can see how much is in cargo on the first tab of the information screen.

Be aware that watching them mine is contraindicated; if you’re not watching, the game doesn’t bother to do collision testing with the asteroids meaning the work goes faster.

OK,,, I give up,,, I tried for 19 hours of play,, and this game just sucks. I wish I could get my money back,, I guess 100 bucks in trashed.

Sorry to hear that. (Personally I recommend never buying all the DLC at once; play the base game first and then buy them one at a time if you keep playing).

What do you dislike the most?
Dirty Harry Apr 27, 2023 @ 6:10pm
I did play without DLC, v 4.0 ,, but thought it was going to be better in v 6.0. Got the mining ships down, and sent out 2,, but got bored with just sitting there, so I played " Young Gun Start ".. Left the station to explore, and ship was attacked and I was killed in less then 3 min.
Game over.

The ui is not very intuitive but play around with it and it will come together in time. Stick to basic functions like can be found in behaviours tab for now. Plunk down some satellites and resource probes. Slowly build up. There are few timers so you can take your time and explore at your own pace, kind of like Skyrim in space.
