Waiting for X5 is silly, that way you will never play: when X5 comes out you will want to wait until the initial bugs are all fixed, and then of course once they are fixed you might as well wait for X6 and so on.
Like it was already said, X5 is years away and devs are still gonna support X4 with new features and updates after 6.0. They are still working (or reworking rather) on Ventures that will come during Summer or Late Summer.
It is a good time to jump in. Game's good.
The main reason for this is Egosoft are a small company and they always develop each release of the X games over a long period of time. Years. In X4's case about four years now. The game is vastly better now than it was on first release in every possible way. It's mature basically.
When they decide to make X5, and who knows when that might be, Egosoft themselves haven't decided that yet, the game will be back at starting point on initial release. It will take them years post-release to get it to play as well as X4 does now. Pencil in around 2030-ish for X5 to beat X4 as it is now.
X4 has a lot of jank. Wait until you've played a bit and decide you can put up with the jank. They don't add functionality that changes the game, the DLC mostly just makes the map bigger and adds a bit more not-necessary ship variety.
