Boron Equipment incompatibility with other factions
i think it is very sad, that boron equipment is for boron ships only and vice versa.
you can even mix with the terrans.

even lore wouldn't make any sense there, since they use other standards too (like docking pads etc. even the stores at their stations are the same).

so why not give the option to mix equipment with borons.

They tried when started working on the Boron ships but very early learned that the organic design can't be munged together with the existing surface elements without seriously compromising the aesthetics.

It was no simple choice "let's do this" but a hard learning process with (yet) another compromise.

I've to say the result is worth it - having a faction with turrets retracting back into the hull is very nice :)

I like it, i hate the ''every faction can use everything'' approach.

I'm chiming in a bit late because I just got my first Boron Ship, and I do not care for their Weapons. They are Definitely Powerful... but Way Too Slow; especially for a Bad Shot, like myself. (Though it is forcing me to Target Better (No More Pray & Spray)). :(

However... I like ZPCs take on the matter; it does make sense as Boron are more Organic than the other Factions that Swapping Weapons (and Other Equipment) To and From the other factions would call for Massive Changes (both in HardWare and SoftWare) which probably wouldn't be Cost Effective; let alone Compatible with Other Ship Systems.

(If it's Immersive... It's True - LoL)

we could have used an allowlist instead, so only certain equipment is blocked. I'm not a fan of this kind of lazy decision making

? Lazy I would think would say screw it to unique weapons/shields/engines and just let them use commonwealth equipment.

the allow list was how X3 did it. Boron weapons were used on certain Argon and Split ships in X3.

In X3 there were no faction weapons as such (until Terran came along). All weapons and shields would be produces across the comonwealth, where for exampel Argon woul dhave the Alpha ISE and the Boron teh Beta ISE (cant recall which to which now, but you get th epoint.

The weapon filter was more about the weapon itself, rather then who built it, so most if not all ships could mount ISEs for example as its the lowest level weapon.

so the Ion Cannon for instance is a Boron weapon in X3. It is only produced by them and only them. It even states it in the encyclopedia in game. It can be mounted on
Titan (M2, Argon)
Shark (M1, Boron)
Ray (M2, Boron)
Thresher (M7, Boron)
Phoenix (M2, Teladi)
Boreas (M2, OTAS/Argon)
Truelight Seeker (M6, Gon/Argon)
Megalodon (M2, Boron)
Brigantine (M2, Pirates)
Akuma (M2, Yaki)

"A deadly weapon found on frigates, destroyers and carriers. Upscaling IPG technology and taking advantage of the massive energy available to capital ships, the Ion Cannon is the pinnacle of Boron ion weaponry. A huge amount of ion energy is concentrated into a single projectile and can disrupt a target ship's systems, such as engines and weapons, in addition to causing a large reduction in shield energy."

By default it was sold at Queen's retribution unless the player starts making more of them.
The filter very much means "who has capability to equip it". As we know Boron's were allied with the Argon. It is no stretch that Boron and Argon ships can equip boron weapons. It is just lore accurate. Yaki and pirates just scavenge everything somehow cause they are them. The teladi back then were the definition of modular but slow and could equip almost anything.

The Alpha Beta Gamma system was how refined it was (how much dmg it did). In X3TC it was removed. You only had Impulse Ray Emitter for instance or HEPT. Back in X3R Gamma did most dmg alpha being weakest but cheapest and least energy consumed. All common wealth ships that is could equip the ISE in X3TC for the most part due to common weapon.

Personally... I feel that every faction should have the own Weapons, Equipment, Etc. which fit their own Ships at Cost. But can be Fitted to other Faction Ships at an Additional Cost. The further apart the 2 factions are (i.e. Argon vs Paranid), the higher cost; while lower cost for Factions with better relations (Shared Technology).

Think of it in the sense of Metric vs Imperial; where we are not just talking about different Countries, but about Different Species. Everything would be different; even Power Management; so it would take a bit of effort to make One Species Systems compatible with another Species.
