Can you build your own ships?
Can I build like an mega complex at the HQ and make my own ships or do I need to supply the shipyards of other factions?

You can have your own shipyard.

One of the things to aim for is building your own Wharf and buying or earning the blueprints for each ship and the parts that make them up.

You will need a lot of credits though, so get earning through other means

The only hitch to keep in mind is you have to buy the blueprints, there's no reverse engineering like in X3. So, if you want to fight the same factions whose ships you want to fly, remember to buy those off them first...

My self-sustaining, all-in-one, frame killing ship printer. It can print obscene numbers of fighters and capitals and usually runs out of crew for the ships before resources. Only reason I don't put it on the HQ is because I warp the HQ around for terraforming and the ship printer factory will bring me down to single digit frames when I get near it. It's way easier to defend though rather than have a bunch of factories spread out. Pirates stealth in and eject all your stations resources all the time that way but this station will nuke it with thousands of turrets the second it turns red.

It only turns red after it ejected your cargo tho. To stop them in advance you'll have to reveal them with police ships and have a fire override to kill them.

And due to some really weird bug, sometimes a station with a fire override to kill them will only fire on a revealed pirate if there are also ships with a fire override protecting position there or defending the station. Really annoying.

You can keep pirate destroyers away from your stations by putting a destroyer of your own to defend them. Seems to scare them off from even trying most of the time.

For the rest just set the stations fire override orders to ruthless for SCA and they'll kill them the moment they uncloak.
Alternatively build in a neutral sector and don't claim it yourself and they don't cloak at all.

Neutral sector doesn't work with your shipyard unfortunately since build modules claim the sector.

As long as you don't build the Defense administration module you will not claim the sector.

Unless it's changed recently, any of the build modules (S/M, L, XL) will claim a sector. They don't generate hostility if it's already owned, however.

They still do that. It works fine for any other stations though.

by the time your building shipyards you should have the means to protect them as well right?

I don't understand all y=ou people making this kind of garbage stations, I mean where is the pleasure of landing on that thing and looking around at how beautiful your shipyard it... I'm not even sure your computer can make it through the docking without blowing up xD

They're not hard to protect really, from most enemies they'll protect themselves. The problem is that the game makes it mechanically annoying to attack a pirate ship before it unloads the station's cargo. In neutral space you can work around it, but in your shipyard's sector you'll need patrols to automate IDing the ships unless you micromanage it.

That or you build in VIG space since they really don't like competition and do not seem to bother your stations.
