Do I have to start a new game to try each story?
Like I finished the tutorial but there was no option to jump into the Emergence campaign so I started a new game. Will I need to do this with each expansion or can everything be played from a single save file (even if I've started with Kingdom End)?

Tutorials startsand the station editor are separate. You can play all content with any other start.

The only difference between gamestarts is your starting location, starting reputation and assets and a short introductory quest chain (if any, some don't have one).

Every plot can be played from any gamestart.

No, when you choose a start option, it just changes your race, your starting ship, where you start your game and what your initial reputations are with the factions.
Then you can do all storylines when you reach the systems where the related races are.

The Terran start (Cadet) gives you a few more missions, so it is a good start for newcomers. But again you can do all the content no matter which start you choose.

The race specific starts perhaps. But most stories are not race specific. I just completed the Boron re-unification with an old ~3.0 save game

the new Kingdom End starts can have the PHQ spawn in Heretics instead of Grand. i can see this being a major difference until you get the trillions of electronics for the research chains to move it

I suspect other starts may be able to spawn the PHQ in Heretics by starting the expedition before doing the regular HQ quest, with the probable exception of Terrans because i can see it breaking bad if they allowed it there, or it just janks it from Heretics back into PIO space for the usual terran version of the HQ plot, or clones it??

I havent personaly confirmed the Heretics HQ stuff outside of the KE starts yet tho but I did see a post elsewhere about someone doing a plain custom start spawning the HQ in there, so it should work like that for non Terran starts and customs that dont start with the HQ

but outside of the new HQ location options for the story starts, all the scripted starts just have slightly different startsing equipment or flavor that hook into plots, and the rare cutscene where you see your character. a certian NPC can also now say the original name of your starts character.

Thanks guys. :)

Just more specifically though, how do I find a particular expansion if I go with one particular start? I've started with Kingdom End now so when I've finished that story, how do I go backwards to Tides of Aavarice etc. - is it just a case of knowing which system I need to travel to?

Yes, DLC plots will start when you find the matching DLC sectors.

You get the same story playing old game. And the actual boron start is locked until you do this story mission. So might as well go into it from a previous game.

The boron gate is closed no matter what start you do. Not going lie, I don’t like story missions, but this one is way more annoying than the HQ. I hate restarting because of HQ mission I done billion times, I have no desire to ever have to do boron opening gate ever again. The story part is fine. The things you have to do is not.
