that why they are finicky
The asteroid itself isn't even part of the base and so the Destroyer have a hard time aiming
The ship is trying to shoot something but is blocked by the asteroid.
There are wires that goes into the asteroid and because ships like to aim at the central piece of the module they struggle finding where to shoot because they are aiming at the interior wires.
Good thing is that the Asteroid base doesn't really serve any purpose and you can just have ship kill them OOS and the Xenon won't build them anymore after it destroy.
My current gameplay is just one fleet so I have to cheat it now lol
OOS combat is the solution if you ever have issues destroying any kind of station.
Not sure why Egosoft gave that one the thumbs up.
I had that problem with my Asgards. They ripped this Xenon defense platform down to 30% hull and then just stopped doing damage. Leaving the sector didn't help. Leaving the sector, then saving and reloading the game did.
So the VIG warf took out 30 behemoths and is still floating. I've just sat in GE watching it happen since trying to give a retreat order often ends with ships clipping and dying in chained explosions as the station lays into them. Time to send in the fighters so the station can't heal I guess.
Use destroyers with lots of L - plasma turrets, I usually just tell them to move close to the station, forming a cicrcle, then I move them closer and closer until they start firing the L plasmaturrets , then I just sit back and watch them destroy the station.
If one gets too close I just make him back up.
I think I never actually used an attack order against stations, except once it's 80% Dusted.
this tactique takes a little more time than just clicking on attack but it works perfectly and you won't loose any destroyers.
Also you don't wanna send 30 Destroyers on attack against a station, specially if you don't play the 6.0 Beta, because they seem to have some kind of bubbled around them which will make navigating around a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nightmare for them.
10 destroyers is really the maximum you want to have in a fleet prior to 6.0 Beta, I think in the beta it actually gets a lot better but I went back playing my modded game, vanilla is way to quiete for my taste xD
With Beta 6.0, you can just send waves of S/M fighters to strip the station of its turrets and then send in capitals to destroy the station itself. This is thanks to a new command for attack which tells fighters to specifically target turrets. Load the S ships with burst rays and the Ms with thermal D I suppose.
When you can print your own S ships, they are fairly expendable.
