will X? be coop? i don't know either.
surveys say that there is interesst in cooperative multiplayer follwed by an almost similar ammount of players that don't care.
(i count my self to those who don't care but won't reject the possibility either.)
it would be nice to be able to cooperate with your fellow friends indeed... like i said, i don't know if the current iteration of the X series will ever be capable to support it... Ventures were a small step into that direction.. and as we all know... they are slowly (with very tiny steps) coming back after having a long hiatus.
i my self are waiting patiently for the big multiplayer dream to come true... like literally since i purchased my copy of XBtf & X-T in a bundle called X-Gold.. that was around 20 Years ago.. i think.
tl:dr:
the idea is there, the demand is there... question is how to make it happen in a way that statisfies EVERYONE and not just the "make it ike [insert generic title]" members of our community.
(i'm looking specificly at a certain Shark who will sooner or later leave a reply in here)
Not that I am extremely against coop or something, but developing and balancing the game for more than one player is no small task. It would almost halt all other development because the team is so small, and that's something I really have some reservations about...
However, it doesn't seem like there is much enthusiasm for this idea, especially since it requires an unmodified game, or perhaps limited to a specific 'whitelist' of certain mods.
There was a poll recently, where most of those who responded were interested in co-op in some form.
Additionally, Egosoft have further delayed added ventures as-planned to the game for many months. This leads me to believe that they are cooking up something bigger than what most people may be expecting.
We will see.
The game needs a lot of optimization, not so much in the graphic part, but mainly in terms of memory usage, threads, disk access, processing... if they get into the multiplayer fad, the problems will only escalate.

So, yes, definetly, someday i would like to see a fully supported X coop game.
Would be a dream.
But let's stay realistic, i don't see this happening with the current X4 iteration.
They didn't do that survey just for the yucks of it, they're in the planning stages of the next game and need direction.
LOL I wasn't going to say anything but ya know. . . it needs to be setup exactly like Minecraft. I think we can all agree on that point. The people that want to stay single player can play exactly as it is now. Multiplayer is exactly the same as the single player there's just more factions in the galaxy.
Galaxy runs on the server. You can run a small one on a spare PC you own or pay per month to host a monster server for hundreds of people. Install whatever mods you like on the server.
I'm telling you, X will be a breakout hit if you just follow the plan, Stan.
I've probably purchased 15 copies of X4 over the years and given them away to my friends. We're all gamer nerds we have LAN parties at work and we have our own corporate official Steam group and everything. These dudes are hardcore gamers from the wayback just like me.
They all call X "that boring space game you play". If I could just invite them into my game, spawn them on the flight deck of my Raptor and let them all command my ships and zip around and blow stuff up they'd play the crap out of that. I wouldn't mind losing 20 or 30 fighters that's chicken scratch to me.
But to get to the point where you sneeze out 20 or 30 fighters like nothing takes a considerable amount of time they're not willing to invest. Multiplayer would let both groups of players have their fun.
That's my biggest fear. Every game that blows up caters to fat checks and mass appeal ultimately becoming simplistic, dumbed down and without soul. Don't get me wrong, I want Egosoft to be successful, I just don't want to see them turn into EA/Bethesda/Frontier/Ubisoft/CDPR or any big triple A studio that once upon a time made quality games then became hyper popular and started churning out steamy trash for investors and stock portfolios vs. making games for gamers which is what Egosoft still does.
And yeah, since I am here, may as well add my 2C in that I just would rather them focus on what they have been, great single player games with mods but that's just me personally. :) We'll just have to see what happens in the future!
We like this niche.
This is why I answered the survey "doesn't matter to me".
Would it be absolutely incredible, an amazing achievement, if they could make an X game that was exactly like singleplayer, except more players? Sure. But can Egosoft realistically provide that? I really don't think so.
It may be cynical, but my gut tells me for Egosoft to try something like that right now would end the company. No more X anything would come from them.
My gut hasn't steered me wrong on any major decisions so far in life.
The closest game to X4's gameplay style I can think of is Mount and Blade Bannerlord. They tried pushing Multiplayer pretty hard at the expense of single player and that game turned out so badly I'll never buy a Taleworlds game again.
